Located in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat, Lothal was a major trading center of the Indus Valley Civilization as well as a symbol of India’s maritime power and prosperity. Five thousand years ago Lothal was not only a port but also a place of ship repair, a living history that will be revived here.
Lothal was one of the major cities of the Harappan civilization and is known for the discovery of the oldest man-made dock.
A ‘National Marine Heritage Complex’ (NMHC) is being constructed at Lothal, a witness to the history of the Indus Valley Civilization, which will showcase India’s maritime heritage.
The ‘National Marine Heritage Complex’ will be a harmonious blend of history, education, research and entertainment.
This magnificent maritime heritage will be experienced through modern technology. Due to the foresight of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the redevelopment of this ancient site has become possible. Lothal, an important site of Gujarat’s ancient heritage, is going to witness a major transformation. Thus, the museum being built by combining Gujarat’s rich ancient maritime heritage with modern-day dimensions will realize Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s goal of ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’.
Along with being a tourist destination, it will also become a center of study.
Attempts are being made to revive the same era using technology.
World’s tallest lighthouse museum will be built in this premises
World’s tallest lighthouse museum will also be built in the National Maritime Heritage Complex. This iconic lighthouse museum will be 77 meters high and will have an open gallery at 65 meters, providing an open-air viewing gallery to all visitors of the entire complex. There will also be a lighting show at night. A floating restaurant facility will also be set up at the National Maritime Heritage Campus Museum. A 100-room tent city and resort will be ready. E-cars will be available for visiting the museum. Parking for 500 electric cars and 66 kV substation have also been commissioned.
14 galleries showcasing maritime heritage will also be on display
The state government has allotted 375 acres of land for this. Apart from the Lothal mini entertainment center to re-display Harappan architecture and lifestyle in the museum, many new and unique facilities will also be provided after the construction of four theme parks like ‘Memorial Theme Park’, ‘Marine and Naval Theme Park’, ‘Climate Theme Park’ and ‘Adventure and Entertainment Theme Park’.
14 galleries showcasing India’s maritime heritage from the Harappan period to the present day and a Coastal State Pavilion displaying various maritime heritages of other states and Union Territories will also be housed here.
A maritime university will be established. An institute will also be established. An underwater themed open gallery will also be created.
