Robert’s design

When VP Singh became the Prime Minister, he officially declared it as the official residence of the Prime Minister.

The country’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi chose Safdarjung Road as her residence. Safdarjung’s residence was converted into a memorial site for Indira Gandhi.

Earlier during the British rule, the Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army lived here and it was known as ‘Flag Staff House’. After his death, the official residence was converted into a memorial and library.

Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of the country in 1964. He made 10 Janpath his residence. Shastri ji also used to do farming here.

The complex of this bungalow has the headquarters of the main opposition party Congress on one side and the memorial of the second Prime Minister on Motilal Nehru Marg on the other side.

Congress’ Sonia Gandhi lived in 10 Janpath. In 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi was not the Prime Minister, he stayed at 10 Janpath with Sonia Gandhi and children. Many say that having a temple under a tree did not help the Congress come to power, believing that disaster was about to happen.

But from 2004 to 2014, 10 Janpath remained the ‘second center of power’.
