The number of students from Gujarat going abroad to study in other countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Australia, has declined by 40 percent. Of the 800,000 students from India who went abroad to study, 8 percent were from Gujarat. Meanwhile, 40,000 students from around the world come to India to study. Thus, India has failed to become a global leader in education. Only 64,000 students from Gujarat have gone abroad to study.
In the last two years, from April 2022 to March 2023, 14,864 students applied to Gujarat University for foreign verification and transcripts.
From April 2023 to March 2024, 18,237 students applied.
From April 2024 to March 2025, 11,071 students applied.
In the five months from April 2025 to August 2025, 4,666 students applied.
Student visa regulations have been relaxed in the US and Canada.
Country
30% of children from low-income families in small towns and cities used to go abroad for studies. This number has doubled to 60%. These children mortgage their homes or agricultural land to go abroad.
Smaller countries are more suitable for low-cost studies than the four major countries. Many Indian students want to study abroad, but their spending capacity is limited, so they look for options other than the US, UK, and Canada. Even if they are financially capable, they go to Dubai, Singapore, Chile, South Korea, and Germany.
Foreign Students Coming to India
In 2021, 22,159 foreign students came to India to study.
In 2022, the number of foreign students coming to India was 31,910.
In 2023, 40,431 foreign students came to India for higher education. While the number of Indian students going abroad to study was 765,000.
Universities in India are not prestigious.
In 2014-15, the number of universities was 760. In 2021-22, this increased to 1,168.
In 2014-15, there were 38,498 colleges. In 2021-22, this increased to 45,473.
In higher education, there were 34.2 million students in 2014-15. This increased to 43.3 million in 2021-22.
