Metro rail will be laid to Bopal, Sanathal and Naroda, 30 story of metro

Elections have presented two big schemes simultaneously

Dilip Patel
Ahmedabad, 20 August 2025
The government is preparing to announce two schemes simultaneously in Ahmedabad. The first is that Mehsana, Kadi, Kalol, Dehgam, Sanand and Changodar will be connected to Ahmedabad by a light train on the existing rail line. A feasibility report will be prepared. A public transport system will be established. However, this rail was announced by Nitin Patel 12 years ago. Now after 12 years the government has woken up.

Secondly, a new metro line, Phase 3, will be laid.

All this is happening because elections are coming. BJP wants to form the government again in Ahmedabad. Although Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are not active at all in Ahmedabad, BJP will still announce these two schemes to attract voters. BJP is betting on winning the next two elections through these two schemes.

Metro
The population of Ahmedabad city alone is expected to increase from 1 crore to 10 crore in a decade.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation will run Narola to Naroda Metro Rail to start Metro Rail Phase-3 in Ahmedabad. Delhi Metro Rail Company will prepare DPR by conducting geo-technical tests. After the land is allotted by the city government, the capacity of the land will be checked. According to an estimate, if all the work is completed in the stipulated time, then Phase-3 work will be completed in 2030-31.

Cost of Rs 10 lakh per passenger
The cost of building one kilometer of rail is currently Rs 300 crore. By the time the new line is completed, it will cost Rs 500 crore per kilometer. Rs 25 thousand crore has already been spent on the 62.73 km long route in Ahmedabad. If the new line comes, its cost will be three times more. In this way, an investment of Rs 1 lakh crore will be made on the Ahmedabad rail line. Thus, there will be an investment of Rs 1 lakh per person for the people of Ahmedabad Gandhinagar. That is, Rs 5 lakh per family. However, since the number of people traveling by rail will not exceed Rs 10 lakh per day, the cost per passenger can be considered an investment of Rs 10 lakh. With this amount, the government can provide a free car to each passenger.

Announcement will be made before the elections

Since there are many obstacles in laying the Eastern Railway, the line will have to be laid underground at some place. Now that the Ahmedabad government elections are coming, a new announcement is going to be made. In 2003, Narendra Modi had announced the metro before the elections. Which was started barely 20 years later in 2022.

3 lines of Phase-3

1 – It will go from APMC Sarkhej to Naroda via Narol.

2 – It will go from Thaltej village to South West Ahmedabad Sports Arena (South Bhopal).

3 – From Shilaj to Sanathal.

Who has been assigned the work
DPR
GMRC Limited has been assigned the task of drafting the project report for the third phase of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Land investigation
The work of geotechnical investigation and preparation of partial DPR has been assigned to Test House, Jaipur.

Topography
NK Engineers Delhi has been appointed consultant for topography survey and DPR. Gujarat Metro Rail has written a letter to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for geotechnical investigation and topography survey.

Land demand
Gujarat Metro Rail has written a letter to the city authorities to allot land for the construction of RTO-Jivraj-Narol-Naroda-Civil Hospital as well as metro corridor from Thaltej to sports ground and Shilaj to Sanathal.

Road 3 will be difficult
It will be very difficult to give land for the third phase corridor from Jivraj to Naroda. The bridges on the National Highway are becoming a hindrance in this. Flyovers are being built from Narol to Ujala via Vishala Circle.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has allocated funds to build a road from Narol to Naroda in the 2025-26 budget. There are many drains and public roads on the road from Narol to Naroda. There are two lines of old mega pipelines, old sewers, Raska Weir. It is very difficult to move all these.

There is a double-decker bridge at CTM junction. Due to which the metro line is impossible. It will have to be laid underground. However, the central and state governments are adamant on the construction of the third phase.

Future plans

Sardar Patel had built a ring road around the new Ahmedabad. That ring road can now have metro rail. Apart from this, the 80 km long new ring road built by Surendra Patel can be used for rail in the future.

The existing rail, known as Metro, is a rail system for metropolitan cities. The metro is separate from the Indian Railways and has its own right of way.

Two corridors
The metro rail network connecting Ahmedabad to the state capital Gandhinagar is 68.28 km long.
The north-south corridor from APMC Sarkhej to Motera Stadium is 21.16 km long.
The east-west corridor from Thaltej village to Vastral village is 18.87 km long.
It has 22 stations. The work on Gandhinagar is yet to be completed.

Metro Rail Part-1 consists of local trains from Vastral to Thaltej and Part-2 from APMC to Motera and from there to Gandhinagar. There were not many bottlenecks except in the original city. But now it has become difficult for the rail line to pass over high bridges, large pipelines, sewage lines, etc.

The Ahmedabad Metro Rail used to carry an average of 90 thousand passengers in a year on normal weekdays and 75 thousand passengers on holidays. The journey from Vastral to Thaltej Metro Station took 15 days.

It takes 39 minutes. Due to technical fault, it is running at a slow speed. While the journey from APMC to Motera takes 32 minutes.

Rail in the country

Metro train started in Kolkata on 24 October 1984. By 2025, 23 cities in 11 states will have a rail network of 1,013 km. 1.12 crore passengers per day

Travel 2.75 lakh km by trains.

India ranks third in the world after China and the US in terms of rail lines.

Despite the incomplete work of Ahmedabad Metro in Gujarat, its first phase was started on 30 September 2022.

Ahmedabad has the country’s fifth metro rail network of 62.73 km. Kolkata has 60.28 km, Chennai 54.1 km, Nagpur and Pune 38.22 km, Noida-Greater Noida 32.97 km, Kochi 29.7 km, Lucknow 28.38 km and Kanpur 22.87 km of rail lines.

The Delhi Metro Rail has 288 stations and 29 interchange stations on a route of 393 km in 12 lines in 3 phases. In contrast, the size of the Ahmedabad Metro is much smaller.

The metro network of Gurgaon, Jaipur, Navi Mumbai, Indore and Agra together has a route of 978.65 km.

Cost in the country

In August 2025, the Union Cabinet approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project with 11.165 km long 12 metro stations, which will cost Rs 5,801 crore. The cost of one kilometer is Rs 511 crore.

The annual metro budget for 2025-26 in the country is Rs 34,807 crore. Rs 13,235 crore has been received as a loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The cost of 13 km of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is Rs 4,600 crore. The cost of 2.8 km extension of Delhi Metro Phase-4 will be Rs 1,200 crore. The 26.5 km long metro line connecting Rithala in Delhi to Kundli in Haryana is being built at a cost of Rs 6,230 crore. That is, the cost per kilometer is Rs 235 crore. Thus, the cost of the metro line being built in Gujarat is seen to be the highest at Rs 300 crore per kilometer.

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has provided more than 2,000 metro coaches to cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Mumbai till May 2024.

6 km of metro is being started every month in the country.
Rajkot
The government had announced the construction of metro rail in Rajkot a year ago. The cost of preparing a 38 km route can be Rs 10 thousand crores.

Metro in Gujarat
52 stations have been built in 68.29 km of Ahmedabad Metro in Gujarat, out of which 4 are underground railway stations.

36 stations will be built in Surat Metro Phase-1. Out of which 6 will be underground stations. While the length of this entire metro railway will be 40.35 km. Rs 300 crore will be spent on the telecommunication system.

Vehicles
In 2024, 18 lakh vehicles were registered in Gujarat. Of these, 12 lakh vehicles were two-wheelers. In the same one year, 3.5 lakh four-wheelers and 4000 buses were registered.

In 15 years, the annual registration of vehicles in Gujarat has increased from 41,000 to 18 lakh.

200 cars are registered in Ahmedabad city every day.

Ahmedabad has less than one square meter of road space per person. European and American cities have 3 to 4 square meters of road space per person. Now Ahmedabad does not have the capacity to handle the increasing number of vehicles. Still, 3 lakh new vehicles are purchased in Ahmedabad every year. That is 560 vehicles per day.

1.7 lakh vehicles were purchased in Surat city in the last one year. (Google translation from Gujarati language)
