Even Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, known for extremely poor performance in social sector, have a better immunization coverage among the one-year olds than Gujarat, 80.6%, 82.2% and 91.7%, respectively.<br \/>\nA study of 10 countries, Afghanistan, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan and Uganda, the 92-page\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/272864\/9789241565615-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO report<\/a>, \u201cExplorations of inequality: childhood immunization\u201d, released this month, seeks to analyze how things stand in each of these countries against the backdrop of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which resolved to combat inequalities within and among countries.<br \/>\nAnalyzing DTP3 (which stands for three doses of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines) immunization coverage, the report states, in India, the \u201ccoverage was equal in boys and girls and female- and male-headed households, and there was little difference between coverage in urban and rural areas\u201d.<br \/>\nHowever, it notes gaps when one takes into account factors like mother\u2019s education level (less-educated subgroups showing lower coverage) and wealth quintiles (poorer quintiles showing lower coverage).<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-EfywmINF_1c\/W1jdRxq045I\/AAAAAAAAbvU\/QfrAre8-2OAuyzk6Appb2MUqkrZhMluOgCLcBGAs\/s1600\/Screen%2Bshot%2B2018-07-25%2Bat%2B2.57.27%2BPM.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-EfywmINF_1c\/W1jdRxq045I\/AAAAAAAAbvU\/QfrAre8-2OAuyzk6Appb2MUqkrZhMluOgCLcBGAs\/s640\/Screen%2Bshot%2B2018-07-25%2Bat%2B2.57.27%2BPM.png?resize=640%2C398&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"398\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"357\" data-original-width=\"573\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u201cDTP3 immunization coverage tended to be lower among children of mothers aged 35\u201349 years, children belonging to scheduled tribes and children in certain subnational regions\u201d, the report says, adding, \u201cThere was a weak, although significant, association for mother\u2019s age at birth and mother\u2019s caste\/tribe as well as for place of residence.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>WHO continues, \u201cChildren with highly educated mothers aged 20\u201349 years who belonged to the richest 20% of the population had a 5.3 times higher chance of being vaccinated, compared with children born to teenaged mothers with no education, in the poorest 20% of the population.\u201d<br \/>\nThe report notes, \u201cSex-related inequality was non-existent, as male and female children presented the same level of coverage (79%)\u201d, adding, \u201cLooking at mother\u2019s characteristics, the coverage of DTP3 immunization was the same for the 15\u201319 years and 20\u201334 years subgroups (79%), while coverage was lower in the 35\u201349 years subgroup (70%).\u201d<br \/>\nFurther, it says, \u201cThe gap between the no education subgroup and the subgroup with more than secondary education was 18 percentage points.\u201d<\/div>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-2EBwNsI4N3k\/W1jdnvKDsTI\/AAAAAAAAbvc\/xaJx6dn_8tExklH_PUCZD2yj3FRXe6OPwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/Screen%2Bshot%2B2018-07-25%2Bat%2B10.44.50%2BAM.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-2EBwNsI4N3k\/W1jdnvKDsTI\/AAAAAAAAbvc\/xaJx6dn_8tExklH_PUCZD2yj3FRXe6OPwCLcBGAs\/s200\/Screen%2Bshot%2B2018-07-25%2Bat%2B10.44.50%2BAM.png?resize=153%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"153\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"541\" data-original-width=\"416\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\">WHO report<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div>Then, the report says, \u201cThere were small differentials in DTP3 coverage by mother\u2019s caste\/tribe: Coverage was higher among those in the scheduled caste, other backward class or other subgroups (coverage around 80%), whereas coverage was lower in the scheduled tribe subgroup (74%).\u201d<br \/>\nIt adds, \u201cCoverage across subnational regions varied markedly.
