{"id":53540,"date":"2025-12-04T12:39:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T07:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allgujaratnews.in\/?p=53540"},"modified":"2025-12-04T10:47:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T05:17:05","slug":"no-way-out-of-corruption-in-ahmedabad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allgujaratnews.in\/en\/no-way-out-of-corruption-in-ahmedabad\/","title":{"rendered":"No Way Out of Corruption in Ahmedabad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ahmedabad, December 4, 2025<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel allocated \u20b91700 crore to 8 municipal corporations and 5 municipalities to fill potholes and repair damaged roads before the monsoon season began.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the criminal negligence of the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Corporation&#8217;s Engineering Department, an average of \u20b9300 to \u20b9400 crore is spent annually on road works. Previously, it cost \u20b91 crore per kilometer, but now it costs \u20b92 crore for repairs. One wishes that the entire road could be built with that much money. The Engineering Department has been awarding contracts to its favored contractors by issuing single tenders for routine works.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the \u20b925,000 crore allocated to the Road and Building Department, Ahmedabad Metropolitan Corporation received \u20b91.50 lakh. \u20b9546 crore was given to Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, \u20b932 crore to Anand, \u20b9148 crore to Morbi, \u20b9270 crore to Surendranagar, \u20b9257 crore to Nadiad, \u20b972 crore to Navsari, and \u20b991 crore to Vapi. This money is being used to repair roads damaged during the monsoon.<\/p>\n<p>After the monsoon, a situation arose where 200 roads in Ahmedabad had to be repaired and strengthened by filling potholes. So far, work on 32 roads has been completed. For this, 7,000 metric tons of asphalt are being laid daily from 13 asphalt hot mix plants. 230 roads were damaged.<\/p>\n<p>On December 3, 2025, the Municipal Commissioner held a meeting with engineers from all zones and the Road Project Department and instructed them to expedite the completion of work on the remaining roads in different parts of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmedabad has become a city of dust and potholes. Accidents are occurring due to the bad roads. People are dying in these accidents. Complaints of back pain have increased. Reports indicate that 2,000 potholes or gaps have appeared in the city after the monsoon season ended.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, in addition to grants from the Urban Development Department, each MLA received an extra grant of \u20b92 crore in a special case from the Road and Housing Department. The Road and Housing Department provided \u20b986 crore to 43 MLAs in the municipal corporation area, of which not all was utilized in Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n<p>2023-24<br \/>\nIn the financial year 2023-24, potholes on 40 roads spanning 192 kilometers were repaired and strengthened in Ahmedabad. An estimated \u20b9235 crore was spent.<\/p>\n<p>The highest number of roads, 85, were in the Western Zone, including Paldi, Vasna, Navrangpura, Naranpura, Stadium, Ranip, Nava Vadaj, Sabarmati, and Chandkheda wards.<br \/>\nAnother 37 km of roads were repaired in Ahmedabad. In the North West Zone of the city, 74 roads covering 38 km were repaired, including Bodakdev, Thaltej, Ghatlodia, Chandlodia, and Gota wards.<br \/>\nIn the East Zone, 42 roads covering 19 km were repaired, including Vastral, Ramol-Hathijan, Bhaipura, Hatkeshwar, Odhav, Nikol, Gomtipur, Amraiwadi, and Viratnagar wards.<br \/>\nIn the South West Zone, 38 roads covering 16 km were repaired, including Jodhpur, Sarkhej, Vejalpur, and Makhtampura wards.<br \/>\nIn the South Zone, 30 roads covering 13 km were repaired in Behrampura, Lambha, Danilimda, Maninagar, Isanpur, Vatva, Khokhra, and Indrapuri wards. In the Central Zone, there were 25 roads covering 10 km in Shahibaug, Asarwa, Dariyapur, Shahpur, Khadia, and Jamalpur wards. In the North Zone, there were 28 roads totaling 10 km in length across the Saraspur, Bapunagar, Thakkarbapanagar, India Colony, Sardarnagar, Naroda, Kubernagar, and Saijpur Bogha wards.<\/p>\n<p>Hotmix Plant<br \/>\nIn 2022, a decision was made to set up a hotmix plant in Gyaspur with a private partner. The responsibility for operation and maintenance was also assigned to the private partner. This decision came after the Gujarat High Court reprimanded city officials for the poor condition of the roads.<\/p>\n<p>2017: The Year of Corruption<br \/>\nIn 2017, a \u20b9450 crore road scam took place. This scam shook the entire state of Gujarat. The slogan &#8220;Development has gone mad&#8221; resonated with the people and the BJP secured 99 seats in the assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p>Road App<br \/>\nIn 2025, the Road and Housing Department launched the Gujmarg mobile phone app, which was downloaded by 10,000 people. Citizens registered 3632 complaints, all of which were resolved.<\/p>\n<p>The Gujarat Assembly convenes for only 40 days, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation&#8217;s General Board meeting is held only 12 times a year.
