The health of the local residents is deteriorating.

Two sons in the family have had to undergo surgery twice. These two sons are the most severely affected; they fall ill repeatedly.

For the past 10 years, they have been continuously lodging their complaints with the authorities, yet no action has been taken. Notices have, however, been served to the officials.

Dust spews from the conveyor belts, affecting all the surrounding areas.

The factory’s impact is felt most acutely within the village itself, taking a heavy toll on the health of every resident.

Dust settles on the standing crops in the fields. Consequently, mango and coconut trees suffer the most damage; a thick layer of dust accumulates on them, preventing the trees from bearing fruit.

This alarming pollution has now escalated into a major crisis.

Residents are suffering from serious ailments, including respiratory diseases and kidney stones.

Officials listen to the complaints, and the Pollution Control Board issues notices, but they stop short of ordering the closure of the factory. Officials have visited the factory 51 times, yet apart from issuing notices, they have done nothing else.

The company had promised to cover the facility with tin sheets and assured the residents that they would resolve the issue. This situation is truly unfortunate; the authorities simply do not listen to the common people. If we speak up too loudly, they threaten to call the police. If no solution is found, we will continue to present our case before the authorities. We will persist in submitting our grievances to the officials.

The noise levels there are excessive. Whenever guests visit her home, Rajna is unable to sleep.

When she lodged a complaint through the ‘Swagat Online’ program, the company advised her to install tarpaulins.

Iraben Rambhai Jotva, a farmer from Vadnagar, has written a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel to express her distress. Due to cement dust, her husband has developed a respiratory ailment, while her two sons have had to undergo two to three surgeries each for kidney stones.

The letter also states that, within the Kodinar Taluka, Vadnagar records the highest number of cancer patients.

Residents of the village are witnessing a continuous rise in cases of respiratory tract inflammation and lung infections.

Among the 64 villages in Kodinar, Vadnagar accounts for the highest number of cancer cases.

In 2011, the population of Vadnagar stood at 9,296, comprising 2,003 households. By 2026, there has been no significant increase in these figures.

The irrigation water has become contaminated; consuming it exacerbates the problem of kidney stones. Dust settles on the coconut and wheat crops. Consequently—due to the combined effects of the water contamination and the dust—agricultural yield has plummeted by 50 percent.

Even the water in the wells has become polluted.

The surrounding fields turn red in color. Due to the presence of cement particles, the land has become barren.

Najabhai

Najabhai Mulabhai Gadhe stated that, over the past ten years, officials from the Pollution Control Board have visited the plant 51 times.

Dust drifts in during the night and accumulates inside the homes. Every year, approximately four people succumb to cancer. Currently, between 70 and 80 people are suffering from the disease.

Residents experience eye irritation and difficulty breathing. Two hundred and fifty households in the ‘Wadi’ area have suffered severe damage.

The investigation revealed numerous deficiencies. The online monitoring system has been shut down.

The parameters for chimney gas emissions are non-functional.

A pungent, foul odor of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emanates from the AFR section.

No concrete closure notice has been issued, nor has any action been taken to impose strict penalties.

A writ petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court in October 2024.

A demand for compensation was made.

Memorandums have been submitted on numerous occasions to the Collector, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Members of Parliament (MPs), and the Chief Minister.

MLA Mohan Wala submitted a memorandum in 2021.

There are a total of five plants located within the same campus, comprising three cement plants, one DG power plant, and one coal-fired power plant.

Hazardous materials—including chemicals, fuels, and oils—are stored on the premises.

Chemical-laden water and polluted wastewater discharged from the plant are recklessly disposed of without any treatment or adherence to proper protocols. Despite numerous complaints, the issue regarding water contamination within the factory premises remains unresolved.

Adverse effects have been observed on humans, animals, and wildlife; furthermore, wells and lakes have been contaminated, and agricultural crop yields have declined.

People’s homes have become blanketed in cement dust.

Dust continuously billows from the Liquid Yard, Silo Yard, and conveyor belts.

The water drawn from wells is reddish in color and heavily laden with chemicals. This has resulted in detrimental effects on both human health and agricultural crops.

In October 2021, this matter was brought to the attention of Sanjay Singh Aswar, the Mamlatdar (Revenue Officer) of Kodinar.

The company’s management was formally notified in writing on multiple occasions.

Farmers staged protest demonstrations.

To date, the company has failed to take any remedial measures regarding the pollution issue.

Mayur Gadhe
According to Mayur Gadhe of Vadnagar, serious ailments—such as cancer—are spreading within the village as a direct consequence of the pollution. Mines have been excavated by the company.

Bhavesh Solanki
Bhaveshbhai Solanki submitted a memorandum to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The GPCB office located in Gandhinagar was directed to inspect the site and submit a report.

Horticultural Crops

Ambuja
Ambuja Cements Limited

The factory was established in 1986.
At the time of the plant’s inception, its production capacity stood at 700,000 tons.
Currently, the cement production capacity of this integrated plant is approximately 27 million tons per annum.
Here, 60,000 tons of plastic are incinerated.
The company operates factories at 21 locations across 11 states of the country, producing a total of 100 million tons of cement.
To meet the factory’s own energy requirements, a 90 MW captive coal-based power plant has been installed on the premises.
To minimize transportation costs, a marine jetty (wharf) has been constructed at Mul Dwarka, located 7 kilometers away. All export and transportation operations are conducted via the sea route.

This area is also known as ‘Ambuja Nagar,’ as a residential township has been developed around the factory to accommodate its employees.
