BJP leaders and ministers are making misleading claims in election meetings. What is the truth, let us investigate.

On 27 November 2022, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur addressed the press in Ahmedabad. In view of the Gujarat elections, the entire BJP is busy campaigning vigorously. This press conference was also in this series. Anurag Thakur said in the press conference that BJP has given a safe Gujarat. Only then was investment possible and employment possible. So Bharatiya Janata Party gave secure Gujarat.

Not only Anurag Thakur is claiming a safe Gujarat, but all the BJP leaders and ministers are claiming in election rallies that BJP has given a safe Gujarat. They are making claims but are not telling on what basis this claim of safe Gujarat is being made? Has crime ended or reduced in Gujarat? Come, let’s investigate.

crime statistics in gujarat

It is noteworthy that there is BJP government in Gujarat since 2002. So we will investigate whether there has been a decline in crime figures in these two decades? The basis of this investigation is the annual reports of the National Crime Records Bureau and the investigation is started. According to the National Crime Records Bureau report, a total of 1,06,675 crime cases were registered in Gujarat in the year 2002, which increased to 1,23,195 in the year 2007. In the year 2012 this figure increased to 1,30,121. It increased to 1,28,775 in the year 2017 and in the year 2021, crime cases in Gujarat doubled and this figure increased to 2,73,056. Statistically, these twenty years of BJP’s rule are not going to reduce the crime but doubling the crime.

Now let us see what is the rank of Gujarat in terms of crime among different states of the country? If we talk about the last twenty years, Gujarat has been out of the list of top ten states in terms of crime only for a year or two. Gujarat ranks 5th in the country in terms of crime, in the year 2002 Gujarat was at 8th place in the country. National Crime Records Bureau figures are not confirming Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur’s claim of a “safe Gujarat”. Statistics show that in the last twenty years, crime cases in Gujarat have not reduced but have increased exponentially and crime cases have doubled. So Anurag Thakur should tell on what basis he has made this claim? Is Anurag Thakur’s definition of a safe state that if crimes double in a state then it becomes safe?

Were there no riots in Gujarat after 2002?

Not only this claim has been made, but BJP also claims that there has been no riot in Gujarat in the last twenty years and the youth have forgotten what curfew is. Addressing an election rally in Kheda, Gujarat, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the rioters of 2002 were taught a lesson and peace was established in the state. Other BJP leaders are also claiming in election rallies that there have been no riots in Gujarat. Although statistics do not confirm this. According to the 2021 report of the National Crime Records Bureau, 161 cases of riots have been registered in Gujarat, including 3 communal riot cases.

BJP leaders and ministers are making misleading claims in election meetings. Very big claims are being made like slogans. Giving incomplete information to people. This behavior is not only irresponsible but it also shows how “serious” these leaders are about accountability. It would be better if BJP leaders present figures to support the claims they make while giving speeches. Also tell on what basis they are making the claim.
