There were 6.18 lakh trees in 2012
Ahmedabad, October 28, 2025
For the first time since 2012, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is conducting a tree census with an agency called SARS India. According to the tree census work done so far, the Navrangpura ward has the highest number of trees at 180,000.
The lowest number of trees, 651, was found in the Dariyapur ward.
The tree census has completed 991,000 trees in 47 wards. In 2012, there were 618,000 trees in the city. At that time, the city’s green cover was 4.66 percent.
After the tree census is completed, information will be released on the number of trees in each ward, their age, and their utility.
In 2025, ₹69 crore was spent on planting 40 lakh trees in Ahmedabad.
60 percent of the trees planted die due to lack of proper care or watering.
The tree counting process began during the flowering season. Since the agency lacks adequate staff and the monsoon season is slowing down the work, the agency was requested to deploy more staff to speed up the process.
It was also announced that each tree will be provided with a description, name, and GPS connectivity. Once the tree is connected to the GPS system, the system will alert anyone cutting the tree without permission within minutes.
