Gambhira bridge accident (Google translation from Gujarati)
Harshadsinh Parmar, a Congress member of Vadodara Zila Panchayat, said that the Gambhira bridge had collapsed in 2022 itself, but no one paid attention.
July 10, 2025
In the last few years, Gujarat has witnessed some tragic incidents, and another tragedy has been added to this list when a portion of the Gambhira bridge in Vadodara district collapsed on the morning of July 9.
A large slab in the middle of this important bridge connecting Vadodara’s Padra and Anand districts collapsed, causing several vehicles, including two pickup vans, two trucks and a rickshaw, to fall into the river from a great height.
So far, the death of 20 people sitting in these vehicles and victims of the accident has been confirmed. While four people are still missing. Apart from this, five are injured.
In the whole case, the government administration is now being accused of ‘serious negligence in the maintenance and repair of the bridge’.
Against the government in this case, Harshadsinh Parmar, a Congress member of Vadodara Zila Panchayat, has claimed that he had given a memorandum to the government about the Gambhira bridge being ‘dilapidated’ about three years before the accident.
Soon after being elected as a Zila Panchayat member, I had given a memorandum regarding this bridge. On August 4, 2022, I had given a memorandum to the District Magistrate of Vadodara and the Roads and Works Department that the Gambhira bridge at Mujpur is in a very serious and dilapidated condition. In this memorandum, I had suggested immediate site inspection and taking appropriate steps and publishing the test report.
After this memorandum, the Collector had specifically suggested the Executive Engineer of the Roads and Works Department to take appropriate steps.
Harshadsinh Parmar alleges that no action was taken in this matter even after the Collector’s suggestion.
This bridge did not break today, but broke in 2022 when all of us leaders came together to present it.
Till date, no government official has conducted a field inspection of this bridge. It can only be called a man-made incident. This incident happened due to the involvement of government employees.
Dhanjibhai Padhiyar, Sarpanch of Eklabara village, located near the collapsed bridge, was one of the people who reached the spot immediately after the incident.
Talking about what happened at the time of the incident, he said, “I came to know about this incident within five minutes of the bridge breaking, as I live nearby.”
“When I reached here immediately after the incident, I saw that the bridge had broken and fallen into the river, the traffic on the bridge had completely stopped. Later, I informed the former MLA and the current MLA of this assembly constituency. And asked them to further inform the administration about this matter.”
Dhanjibhai Padhiyar said, “Four-five vehicles also fell when the bridge collapsed.”
He also questioned the ‘dilapidated condition’ of the bridge and said, “The administration and everyone knew that the condition of the bridge was dilapidated. If the administration had paid attention to this earlier, people would not have lost their lives.”
Dhanjibhai also reached the spot where the vehicles fell into the river when the bridge collapsed.
Talking about the scene of devastation in the middle of the river, he said, “Vehicles were lying on top of each other. Many people in these vehicles were screaming. Locals of Eklabara and Mujpur tried their best to save the people.”
According to the government press note, “In view of this accident, the Chief Engineer-Design of South Gujarat and a team of Chief Engineer, two bridge construction experts and two private engineers have been instructed to immediately reach the spot and investigate the causes of the bridge collapse and other technical matters and submit a report.”
Reacting to the allegations that the bridge was already dilapidated and no proper inspection was done, Chaitanyasinh Jhala, BJP MLA from Padra, told BBC Gujarati, “It is the work of the opponents to make allegations.”
He further said, “This bridge was regularly inspected and in the last inspection, no danger was found on this bridge. However, the accident that has happened is unfortunate and the government has already ordered an inquiry into its causes. More information will be known after the investigation.”
Vadodara Executive Engineer Nainesh Naikwala said in an interview to The Indian Express, “We did the proper repair work that should have been done after the inspection. At that time, we did not find any danger on the bridge.”
After the Gambhira bridge broke into two parts, officials including the collector went to inspect the bridges.
After the Gambhira accident, inspection of dilapidated and dangerous bridges in the state has started once again. In Bharuch and Narmada, teams of collectors, SDMs and experts from Gandhinagar visited various bridges.

Gambhira Bridge: Necessary Tests
What tests were required before the bridge collapsed and what could be the reasons for the accident?

The middle part of the Gambhira bridge built on the Mahi river in Vadodara collapsed and 15 people died in this accident.
Five more people were injured in the incident, while four people are still missing.
According to a press release issued by the office of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, an inquiry has been ordered into the accident.
Now the question arises, why do bridges collapse? Why do bridges develop cracks? There are many more bridges like Gambhira in Gujarat which have become old and questions are being raised about their suitability.
What should be done to prevent such accidents? What are the reasons and factors behind the collapse of such bridges?
According to experts, every man-made structure requires regular maintenance. But the way this bridge has collapsed, it seems that there may have been ‘negligence’ in the maintenance and upkeep of the bridge.
Retired Gujarat government engineer Babubhai V. Harsoda told BBC Gujarati that looking at the kind of scenes that are visible on the Gambhira bridge, it seems that this bridge has not been inspected and maintained properly from time to time.
He said, “Structural inspection of bridges should be done before and after monsoon. Inspection should be done at least twice a year. It is the responsibility of the officials of the Road and Works Department of the government.”
“If they find this bridge dangerous during inspection, then its use should be stopped, or this bridge should be closed for big vehicles.”
Structural engineer Biren Kansara told BBC Gujarati, “This bridge was standing firmly for so many years, so there is no question on its design or construction, but there is a possibility that this happened due to lack of proper maintenance.”
According to structural engineer Mukesh Majithia, “Detailed information about this has been given in the SP 40 code in the Indian Road Congress Manual. These norms should be taken into account.”
However, he only said that this is a technical subject and no reaction can be given without adequate information about what has happened.

B.V. Harsoda says, “According to the information received, some people had informed the concerned government officials about this ‘weakness of the bridge’, but they did not take any precaution and did not take any action.”
He says, “At the lowest level are the work assistants. Their duty is to work in the area assigned to them.”
Such constructions are constantly monitored. They have an additional assistant engineer and an assistant engineer. Their job is to take note of the report given by the work assistant and also inform their senior officer about it.
Deputy Executive Engineers come under them. Their responsibility is to solve the problems mentioned.
Navsari’s structural engineer Biren Kansara says, “The rods of the bridge have rusted. The concrete has been washed away. It seems that this bridge was not in a position to bear heavy load. Therefore, due to repeated shocks, the bridge would not have been able to bear the load.”
In the whole matter, Executive Engineer in charge of Road and Building Department A. H. Gadhvi told BBC Gujarati correspondent Shyam Bakshi that “Regular inspection of the bridge is done at the same time. Pre-monsoon inspection of the bridge is also done before the rains. Which is mostly completed in the month of April-May. Any bridge is inspected keeping in mind its design and other factors, there is a format for this.” And after inspection a report is prepared and if any defect is found in it, then it is repaired. How much time it takes to repair a defect depends on the nature of the defect.”
What precautions should be taken during bridge maintenance?

Sources say that special precautions should be taken especially in structures where more people gather or come and go continuously and there is a risk of a major accident.
Before construction, after preparing its structural design, the design is verified by a recognized structural engineer. After verification, it is approved by the government authority.
Even after this, it is inspected by a third party to see if its design and structure are correct or not? After this, it is checked that The material used in it is of proper quality and conforms to the standards of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Only then is its use allowed.
It is the responsibility of the government agency to check all aspects of any structure built by any NGO, before opening it to the public. And it should be as per government standards.
What could be the reasons for the collapse of the bridge?

Snehal Modi, a structural engineer of Modi Consultants, while talking to BBC Gujarati, alleged that the government has not done the necessary testing of this bridge.
Snehal Modi says, “The pictures of this collapsed bridge show that this accident must have happened due to cracks in the structural components and inadequate resistance to shear forces.”
He says, “There could be many reasons behind this. The bridge bars might have worn out due to rain or river floods. This might have damaged the concrete.”
The standard procedure that should be followed while repairing the structure cannot be ignored.
“You usually stand in the middle of the bridge and when heavy vehicles pass, the vibrations you feel give the engineer an idea of how strong the bridge is,” says B.V. Harsoda.
“Load testing is important. It shows how much load the bridge can bear. If you feel the bridge is not capable of bearing the load, traffic has to be stopped immediately. Or we have to stop the movement of heavy vehicles and put up warning boards.” Snehal Modi says, “Due to heavy rains, the pillars and slabs must have weakened. The load on it must have increased, due to which the various materials of the bridge got weakened and could not bear the load, due to which the bridge appears to have collapsed.
According to the government press release, “A team of Chief Engineer-Design and Chief Engineer of South Gujarat, two bridge construction experts and two private engineers have been instructed to immediately reach the spot and investigate the causes of the collapse of the bridge and other technical matters and submit a report.”
Responding to the allegations that the bridge was already dilapidated and was not inspected properly, BJP MLA from Padra Chaitanya Singh Jhala told BBC Gujarati, “It is the work of the opponents to make allegations.”
He further said, “This bridge was regularly inspected and there was no danger on this bridge in the last inspection. However, the accident that has happened is sad and the government has already ordered an investigation into its causes. We will get more information after the investigation.”
Vadodara Executive Engineer Nainesh Naikwala told the Indian Express in an interview, “We had completed the necessary repair work after inspection. At that time we did not see any danger on the bridge.”

Experts say that load testing and retrofitting of such structures should be done continuously. In which carbon fiber wraps or steel reinforcement should be used.

Structural testing should also be done to identify their poor quality or weaknesses that are not visible from the outside.”
Experts say that load testing and retrofitting of such structures should be done regularly. In which carbon fiber wraps or steel reinforcement should be used.
The drainage system should be strengthened. So that the structure can be protected from damage caused by waterlogging.
Clear criteria should be adopted to check the quality of the bridge. In which the stress or strain or how much pressure it can withstand can be checked in real time using sensors.
Just inspection is not enough, but structures should also be repaired based on the inspection.
B. V. Harsoda says, “Non-structural repairs, called general repairs, are done for minor damage or small potholes. These are also called cosmetic repairs. If they need more strength, they are repaired to strengthen them. If a disaster has occurred and the structure is damaged, its repair is called rehabilitation repair. If it is necessary to restore the structure to its former form, it is called retrofitting.”
“That is, the structure has to be repaired as required.”

Image caption, A few days ago, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had said in a press release that structural work is in progress on 243 bridges where rains have affected them.
According to clause 9.2.1 of the Indian Road Congress’ SP-40 code guidelines, apart from regular inspection, such structures should be inspected continuously and, if necessary, immediately. If repairs are required, inspection should be done even after repairs.
After repairing such structures, continuous inspection should be done in six to 12 months for three to five years.
According to clause 9.4, periodic inspection is equally important. Even after the repair work is completed, it is important to check it and see that it is working properly. Periodic inspections should be carried out to check if any new defects have arisen.
Such inspections are necessary for the long-term sustainability of constructions and the safety of the public.
Experts also say that agencies or contractors who are found negligent in the use of materials should be blacklisted and care should be taken not to engage them in any road, bridge, causeway or other construction work.
However, a few days ago, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had said in a press release that structural work is in progress on 243 bridges that have been affected by the rains.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also urged that steps should be taken to fix the responsibility of the contractor in cases where damage has occurred or repairs are required during the defect liability period.
He also talked about ensuring that the quality of such works is taken care of.
However, B.V. Harsoda says, “A register should be maintained as per the standards of the Indian Road Congress for inspection and monitoring of such bridges. It is necessary to maintain it, but whether it is done is a question.”

Gujarat Congress leader Amit Chavda said, “A large number of vehicles pass through this bridge. Why do such incidents happen again and again? If the bridge is dangerous, it should be closed or repaired. This incident has happened due to the serious negligence of the government.”
AAP leader Isudan Gadhvi said, “This bridge accident is man-made. Four vehicles including a truck and a pickup have fallen into the river. The question is to the government and the BJP that when the public pays tax, they expect a strong system.”
Accusing the BJP of corruption, he said, “Today one is afraid to cross or go beyond the bridge. If the bridge was dilapidated, why was the traffic not stopped?”

The atmosphere in Sonalben’s village Dariyapar is gloomy. The Padhiyar family is in mourning. The whole village is immersed in grief.
The screams of a woman standing on the shore have plunged the entire village into mourning.
The white bandage tied on Sonalben’s hand and the dried blood stains on it are testimony to her wound.
Of course, this pain is nothing in front of the pain of losing someone close. Six members of Sonalben’s family fell into the river and lost their lives when the bridge collapsed.
Women around Sonalben are consoling her. Her three daughters are sitting next to her, oblivious to the world. The two-year-old brother of these three daughters and their father will never return.

Grieving Sonalben, while talking to Padhiyar, says, “We were going to Baghdana Poonam Bhare. We were seven people in total. I, my husband, my son, my daughter and three relatives were there. No one with me could survive.”
Sonalben tells about saving her life, “The rear glass of the car was broken and I came out of it.”
“I came out and pleaded for help from everyone. But no one came to help. The incident happened at seven o’clock. Everyone was evacuated at eleven o’clock.”
Vadodara: 15 people die in bridge collapse over Mahi river, what did those who went to rescue them see?
“The family was going to Bagdana to fulfill the vow of godfather but…”
Sonalben’s family drowned in front of her eyes. When Sonalben’s two-year-old son, daughter, husband and other relatives were drowning in the river, she was helplessly crying for help.
Sonalben’s husband (Rameshbhai) and their two children – two-year-old son (Naitik) and four-year-old daughter (Vedika) also lost their lives in the unfortunate incident of Gambhira bridge collapse.
According to Sonalben’s uncle Budhabhai, brother of Sonalben’s father-in-law Raoji Padhiyar, Sonalben’s son was born eleven years after four daughters. A feast was organised in the village a month ago to celebrate her birth.
She said, “The family was going to Baghdana to fulfill their vow of having a son, but nature’s eye fell on their happiness and in the morning when the family was passing near the Gambhira bridge… everything fell apart in a moment… with the bridge breaking, Sonalben’s family also fell apart.”
Sonalben says, “My two-year-old son died after drinking water, my family died, my daughter also died, what will I do with my daughters… what will I do sahab, my daughters need their father and brother, from where will I bring them… how will we spend our days now… I am completely broken.”
“This happened to me. Now the government will have to look into all this, what will happen to my daughters… my God-like man drowned after drinking water, for whom will I live? What did he do to me?”

Sonalben’s mother-in-law Surajben is also in the same situation as Sonalben. She says, “My son was going on a pilgrimage. My whole family left. I never thought that our son would drown.”
Gambhira bridge accident: ‘This bridge collapsed in 2022, but no one noticed,’ why are such allegations being made?
..then one or two of us would have survived
Sonalben’s family’s condition is so pathetic that no one can console anyone. All the dreams of the family’s happy life have now drowned in the waters of the Mahi river.
Raoji Padhiyar, head of the Padhiyar family and Sonal Bhabhi’s father-in-law, says, “There were a total of seven people in the car. My two sons-in-law, my son, my son’s daughter-in-law, one of my son’s brothers and two children. Out of these, only my son’s daughter-in-law (Sonal Bhabhi) survived.”
“We went there when we got the news of the bridge collapse. My son and family had left the place some time ago. On getting the news, both of us brothers reached there on a scooter, but the police did not let us go ahead. I told them that it was my son and his family, but they did not believe me. My daughter-in-law came to me and kept saying ‘take my son out’.”
Raojibhai believes that if the police had let them in, one or two of us would have been saved.

The government is currently being accused of not maintaining the bridge. Harshadsinh Parmar, a Congress member of the Vadodara district panchayat, has claimed that he had submitted a memorandum to the government about three years before the tragedy that the Gambhira bridge was ‘dilapidated’.
Harshad Singh Parmar alleges that no action was taken in this matter even after the collector’s suggestion.
He says
“This bridge did not break today, but broke in 2022 when all of us leaders came together and gave a presentation.”
“Till date no government official has done a field inspection of this bridge. It can only be called a man-made incident. This incident happened only due to the involvement of government employees.”
Raojibhai also says in this matter, “The
o-Three years ago, a member of our district panchayat gave a presentation that the bridge is dilapidated. If big vehicles were stopped, this accident would not have happened. This is not an accident, but government negligence. The bridge has collapsed due to the negligence of these officials.”
Saying this, Raojibhai starts crying.
Raojibhai’s brother Budhabhai told the BBC, “The deceased is my nephew. My family is devastated. What did the government do for us? Crores of rupees were given in the plane crash, but now we are helpless.”
According to Budhabhai, “Despite earlier complaints, traffic was still going on. When we passed by there, we felt tremors. The bridge seemed to be shaking.”
The administration has denied the allegations in this regard.
Vadodara Executive Engineer Nainesh Naikwala told The Indian Express in an interview, “We had done the proper repair work that should have been done after inspection. We did not see any danger on the bridge at that time.”
Reacting to the allegations that the bridge was already dilapidated and was not inspected properly, Chaitanya Singh Jhala, BJP MLA from Padra, said, “It is the job of the opposition to make allegations.”
He further said, “This bridge was regularly inspected and no danger was found on this bridge in the last inspection. However, the accident that has happened is tragic and the government has already ordered an inquiry into its causes. More information will be known after the investigation.”

Like Sonalben Padhiyar, the driver of the pickup van that fell into the river and two people sitting next to him have also been rescued safely. While going from Borsad to Jambusar, three people named Jayeshbhai, Anwarbhai (driver) and Razakbhai jumped out of the vehicle after hearing a sudden loud sound on the bridge.
Anwarbhai says, “When we were going from Borsad to Jambusar, the bridge collapsed from behind. And there was a loud explosion. As soon as the bridge collapsed, the Bolero van started following us, so we jumped out of the Bolero.” When we looked back, many vehicles had already fallen into the river below.
Many vehicles, including two trucks and a pickup vehicle, fell into the water due to the collapse of the bridge.
The cooperation of the local people in the rescue operation was remarkable. Along with the rescue team, the local people also joined the rescue work and helped in pulling out the vehicles.
Jairaj Singh, a resident of Mujpur, says, “An acquaintance of mine called me and informed me about the incident. We reached the spot within half an hour of the incident. Local people were pulling the vehicles with the help of ropes and carrying out rescue operations. No team had arrived till then. A Maji was shouting “Save-save-save”. The rescue team arrived after one or two hours.”
Local Ravibhai says, “We reached within half an hour of getting information about the incident. Local people came to help. The accident vehicle belongs to Dariyapura village and nine people were riding in it. This bridge shakes when heavy vehicles pass by. We had complained many times before this.”

Six and a half decade old Bhogav bridge closed for testing
Six and a half Decade-old Bhogavo bridge closed for testing
– Located near Gundi gate on Fedra-Bagodra highway
– Many bridges like Bhogavo bridge are still in dangerous condition, when will the officials wake up?
Dhanduka: The 67-year-old Bhogavo bridge near Gundi gate on Fedra-Bagodra highway has been closed by the authorities.
This step has been taken under the structural survey of bridges after the collapse of Gambhira bridge. In view of the dilapidated condition of the bridge, it has been decided to keep it closed for testing for the time being. This is a right step for public safety, but the serious question is how many such bridges are there in Gujarat, whose condition has become dangerous, yet they continue to operate. Unfortunately, the system wakes up only after a major accident, which is like playing with the lives of people.
Now the public demands that all bridges older than 30 years should be inspected immediately. Also, dangerous bridges should be closed immediately and alternative arrangements should be implemented. A committee should be set up for regular maintenance and audit Bridge monitoring system should be installed and responsibility should be fixed for it.

Traders suffer due to potholes in RCC road from Amreli to Chopta
– Municipal Corporation notice for negligence in the road constructed by Karma Agency of Amreli: Traders again in trouble due to road closure while resuming road work
Anand: Anand Municipal Corporation has issued a notice to contractor Karma Agency-Amreli to rebuild the damaged part at his own expense and the broken part at his own risk.
The construction work of RCC road at a cost of Rs 32 lakh in the heart of Anand was started a month ago by the monopoly Karma Agency-Amreli. During this time the road was closed and the vegetable market was also shifted elsewhere. Due to which the wholesale and retail shopkeepers of this area suffered financial loss due to their business being closed for a month. The Municipal Corporation was also repeatedly informed in this regard.
After the completion of the RCC road work, the road was resumed. At that time due to rain the entire road was washed away and large potholes were formed. The contractor’s negligence has come to the fore in the RCC road which has become dilapidated in just one month. In this regard, the Municipal Corporation has issued a notice to Monopoly Karma Agency-Amreli to rebuild the damaged RCC road from Vehrai Mata Darwaza to Chopta at its own expense. At that time, the work of reconstruction of the part broken by the monopoly has been started.
The municipality has again closed the road due to Takladi road construction work and started repair work, due to which there is anger among the traders of the area. Traders say that on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, wholesale traders in Chopta Verai Mata area had invested from Rs 5 to 20 lakh and now when the road is closed, all the traders are likely to suffer huge losses due to lack of customers. Due to the closure of the road, many traders of the area, including food and grocery traders, are suffering financial losses every day. The negligence shown by the municipality in the construction of RCC road and the use of substandard material has ultimately caused huge losses to the traders.
When Anand was a Municipality, most of the BJP presidents of the Municipality were elected from Chopta and Verai Mata areas. This area is considered to be a stronghold of the BJP. Yet such a big negligence has happened in the construction of the RCC road.
No amount has been paid yet for the newly started work: Deputy Municipal Commissioner
Anand Municipal Corporation Deputy Municipal Commissioner S.K. Garwal has said that the work of the RCC road being prepared by the new contractor from Verai Mata Darwaza to Chopta, Anand Municipal Corporation has not yet paid the contractor for that work.

The bridge at Hatkeshwar in Ahmedabad has been closed for the last three years due to its dilapidated condition, so it has been decided in the standing committee to demolish the ‘dangerous’ Hatkeshwar bridge built at a cost of 42 crores. The demolition of the bridge will cost 3.90 crores. The work has been assigned to a Mumbai firm. The bridge will be demolished within 3 months.
Hatkeshwar bridge will be demolished at a cost of about Rs 4 crore
The construction of Hatkeshwar bridge in Ahmedabad started in 2015 and it was opened to the public in 2017. However, it was closed after questions were raised on the quality of the bridge. After receiving reports on the quality of the bridge from various institutions by the AMC, it was found to be substandard. Ultimately
It has been decided to demolish it, after which the work of demolishing the bridge will be done in the coming days.
Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said, ‘The tender process was conducted three times to demolish the Hatkeshwar bridge and build a new bridge. In which no bidder came. Now, four agencies have submitted tenders in the tender issued to demolish the bridge.’

Gujarat government misled the High Court regarding the condition of the bridge, Chief Justice said- be careful in monsoon
July 10, 2025
In the PIL filed by the Gujarat High Court on suo motu cognizance in the Morbi suspension bridge accident case, the Gujarat High Court had earlier sought a detailed report from the state government including the inspection of all the bridges in the state and their condition, in which the state government claimed that almost all the bridges are in perfect condition, that is, safe, but this claim of the government and the assurance given before the Gujarat High Court itself has proved to be false, misleading the court and hollow.
The High Court had asked the government to inspect all the bridges in the state and prepare a report
During the hearing of the Morbi suspension bridge accident case last year, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal herself had expressed serious concern over the condition of other bridges in the state and strongly urged the government to ensure that such accidents do not happen again and innocent citizens do not lose their lives. The High Court had also directed the government to inspect all the bridges in the state before and after the monsoon and prepare a status report on them.
Bridges get washed away in monsoon, so be careful
The state government had also assured the High Court that all the bridges in the state would be inspected and prepared before and after the monsoon. However, during this assurance of the government, the Chief Justice made a sarcastic remark that bridges get washed away during the monsoon, so it is very important to be cautious in this matter in advance. The Chief Justice also gave the example of Uttarakhand and urged the government to take the issue seriously.
Government’s claims and arguments are misleading the High Court
In this case, the state government had from time to time submitted a status report and a counter-affidavit to the High Court, detailing the condition of all the bridges in the state, and made strong arguments claiming that the bridges are in safe condition. The government had also said that appropriate steps are being taken by the concerned officials, engineers and concerned officials by inspecting and monitoring all the bridges in the state and a status report was also submitted in this regard. However, after the Gambhira bridge accident today, the claims and arguments of the government have been exposed.
The High Court has now reprimanded the government not to let anyone’s life be lost.
Questioning the ability of the Roads and Buildings Department to maintain the historic bridge, the High Court had given an important suggestion to the government that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure the ability, expertise and other things while giving the contract of repair or maintenance of the bridge to private individuals.

The Chief Justice had said that consultation with the Archaeological Survey of India was necessary to preserve the heritage of the historical and ancient bridge and said that this work should be entrusted only to expert architects. The High Court had made a very sarcastic remark that it would not be fair to lose a person’s life or historical heritage.
At that time, the government had told the court that a total of 1441 bridges in the state are in good condition and the government had also assured to close the old and unusable bridges, but after today’s tragedy, the assurances, promises or repeated assurances of the government before the High Court have completely failed and are raising serious questions on the credibility of the government.
The High Court had directed the state government to take full responsibility of the bridges.
The government had said in its report that it had inspected all the bridges in the state and claimed that almost all the bridges are in good condition. When the High Court asked the government, “Are you aware of the condition of two historic bridges in Gondal?”, the government said that the bridges which are dilapidated and unusable will be closed. Therefore, the High Court had reprimanded the government and said that no bridge should be demolished. The responsibility of maintaining the prestigious bridges lies with the state government. The government should take the responsibility of repairing or maintaining all the bridges in the state instead of municipalities or municipal corporations.

This bridge was 40 years old and had collapsed.
People of Gujarat are at the mercy of God
After the collapse of Gambhira bridge, many old, dilapidated and dangerous bridges have now become the center of discussion across Gujarat. According to the details given by the Union Ministry of Road and Transport in the Rajya Sabha, 28 old bridges are being repaired or rebuilt in Gujarat. However, the government is silent about how many bridges are actually dangerous in Gujarat.
Bridges in Kutch
But cracks in just 7 months
The Rudramata bridge connecting the Kutch border was completed only seven months ago, but due to frequent breakage, it has to be repaired.
After the crack in the bridge in Surat, satisfaction was expressed by installing iron plates
The bridge built on the Tapi river on National Highway 48 in Kamarej, Surat is damaged for two years. Vehicles are being dropped with the help of iron plates. The movement of vehicles continues on this bridge 24 hours a day. Still, no action is being taken by the administration.
50-year-old bridge closed for heavy vehicles
The bridge built in Karanjaveri village on the Vapi Shamlaji National Highway passing through Dharampur in Valsad district has been closed for heavy vehicles for 10 days. This 50-year-old bridge has become very dilapidated. For the last six years, the government is being repeatedly informed about this bridge.

In the morning, when their Eco car was passing over the Gambhira Bridge, a part of the bridge suddenly broke, causing the entire Eco car to fall into the river, and five of the six people in the Eco car died tragically. In which, two innocent children named four-year-old Vaidik Rameshbhai Padhiyar and two-year-old Naitik Rameshbhai Padhiyar also died tragically, leaving the family in deep grief. Gambhira bridge accident: People of Anklav, Borsad will have to travel 40 km to Padra
10 July 2025
Gambhira bridge accident: People of Anklav, Borsad will have to travel 40 km. Back to Padra
– People’s time and expense will increase
– Employees and people going to work from both the talukas will now have to travel to Padra via Umeta or Vasad
Anand: The Gambhira bridge in Padra taluka, which connects Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, has broken into two pieces, causing trouble to the people of the surrounding areas and Anand district. People of Anklav and Borsad talukas will now have to travel 40 km more via Umeta or Vasad to reach Padra or GIDC. This will increase people’s time and expense.
Since the Gambhira bridge is a short route to Padra Jambusar, more than 3000 youth from Anklav and Borsad talukas used to travel to work daily by bike, bus, rickshaw and truck. Now with the bridge broken, all the employees will have to travel more than 40 km via Umeta or Vasad to reach Padra or GIDC.
In such a situation, a situation has arisen that the fare for commuting has become more than half of the salary. Due to which many youth may lose their jobs.
Apart from this, the problem of unemployment is also likely to arise in this area. Employees from Anand district who go to Padra Jambusar GIDC,
Calling the PAA of Nand District Collector regarding employment, he said, “Now that the bridge is broken, we will have to go via Umeta or Vasad. Currently we are being paid Rs 507 per day. Then, if we go through the new alternative route, we will have to cover a distance of more than 40 km. In such a situation, if half the salary is spent on rent, then the question is how will the family survive. If the youth of coastal areas do not get employment, then there will be a situation of not even cooking food at home. Therefore, the administration has demanded the owners of industrial units of GIDC to increase the rent amount for the employees coming from this area.
Employees will be produced before the Labor Department: Collector’s PAA
An
ANAND District Collector’s PA said that right now the main focus is on the rescue operation. Therefore, your presentation will be made to the Labor Department or other concerned departments in the coming days. The bridge is likely to take a lot of time to be built, so since the Collector has gone to Gambhira, the rescue team has been talked to in this regard, we will discuss it with them and give you a proper answer after their arrival.
Possibility of difficulties in rescue work due to full moon tide
The tide in the Sea of Khambat comes on the night of full moon, that is, since the full moon tide starts from tonight, the water of the Sea of Khambat comes up to Umeta. Therefore, the villagers were saying that the water is filling up in the rescue work after late night, causing delays and difficulties.
Local people rescued, video of opening the door by the administrative system goes viral
Anand: It seems that the claims of rescue work by the administrative system in the Gambhira Mujpur tragedy have proved to be hollow. According to the local villagers, the administrative system had only two boats for rescue. Apart from this, there was a lack of equipment, the police system was not letting anyone go. So the local villagers took the rescue work in their own hands and started the rescue operation by reaching the river risking their lives. Praising the administration, the villagers made the video of the administration opening the door viral.
Bridges built on Shedhi river on Kheda-Matar road and Mahi river in Sevlia dangerous
July 10, 2025
Bridges built on Shedhi river on Kheda-Matar road and Mahi river in Sevlia dangerous
– Dangerous bridges in Kheda district can cause loss of life and property
– Narrow bridges do not have railings on one side, the rods of the bridge joints are visible and there are many potholes
Nadiad: The tragedy of the Gambhira bridge, considered important to connect Anand and Vadodara districts, breaking into two pieces today has claimed the lives of more than 10 people. Innocent people have lost their lives in this accident involving five-six vehicles. In such a situation, such very dangerous bridges are also being seen in Kheda district. Among these, the bridge built on Shedhi river on Kheda-Matar road and the bridge built on Mahisagar river in Sevlia are also dangerous.
Dangerous and dilapidated bridges are also being seen. Due to these dangerous bridges in Kheda district, the possibility of a major accident at any time is haunting the drivers and the people using the bridge. Shedhi river on Kheda-Matar road is a dangerous bridge. In this regard, the applicant, a resident of Kheda, had filed a PIL before the Collector in January 2025. It has been said in the petition that the Shedhi bridge located on Kheda-Matar road is narrow. A large number of vehicles ply on it throughout the day.
Due to which vehicles come face to face. There is no way to go back and forth. Due to which there is a jam on the bridge. There is a possibility of loss of life due to the movement of pedestrians. At present, a temporary iron strip has been installed on the bridge. If pedestrians collide with vehicles or fall into the river, there is a danger for pedestrians.
I have inspected this bridge myself. The demand of the residents is that this bridge should be converted into two-way roads. In this regard, the applicant has further said that even after this representation, there has been no change in the situation. Since this bridge is one-way, it is narrow, and there is a possibility of a major accident anytime. Earlier, a memorandum was also given to the MLA, Collector and MP.
In which the Collector had written a letter to the engineer and asked to take action.
Apart from this, the bridge built on the Mahisagar river passing through Sevlia in Galteshwar taluka is also in a dangerous condition. The joints between the bridges have rusted. In such a situation, there is a demand that the system should be repaired before a major accident occurs.
Efforts will be made to repair soon: Sam. Engineer, Dakor
In this regard, Mahendrasinh Jala, Deputy Executive Engineer, Dakor Division, Roads and Buildings (State) Department, said that we have given tenders twice for the repair of this bridge. But no contractor has shown interest. Therefore, efforts will be made to repair this bridge soon.

After the Gambhira bridge accident, the Municipal Commissioner ordered an inquiry into the condition of all the bridges in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, Wednesday, July 9, 2025
The 45-year-old Gambhira bridge over the Mahisagar river connecting Central Gujarat to Saurashtra collapsed on Wednesday morning. After this accident, Municipal Commissioner Banchanidhi Pani ordered the officials of the Bridge Project Department to check the condition of bridges, railway bridges and flyover bridges built on the river in Ahmedabad. Instructions were also given to check various buildings owned by the Municipal Corporation in the city.
Ahmedabad has 11 bridges over the Sabarmati river. Apart from this, there are 25 railway bridges, 23 railway underpasses, 20 flyover bridges, three small bridges and seven canal box culverts, i.e. a total of 89 bridges. The Municipal Commissioner directed the officials of the Bridge Project Department and the Engineering Department to check the structural stability of all these bridges and carry out prompt repairs where repairs are required and to increase the strength of the bridges. He also asked the officials to submit a report on the bridges within a week.
Which are the old bridges in Ahmedabad?

To go from Tarapur to Padra, you will now have to cover a distance of 110 km instead of 60 km.

From Tarapur, now you have to travel 110 km instead of 60 km to go to Padra
Traffic pressure increased on Anand Express Highway and NE-48
After the Gambhira bridge accident, the road from Tarapur to Bandhani Chowkdi, Valsan and Anand is now jammed: The movement of heavy vehicles has increased on the Vasad bridge
Anand: After the collapse of the Gambhira Mujpur bridge in Padra, the administration has now closed the Umeta and Gambhira bridges for heavy vehicles. At that time, all the heavy vehicles going towards Saurashtra have been diverted from Tarapur to Anand Express Highway and NE-48 via Bandhani Chowkdi, causing frequent jams on both these roads. At that time, the drivers of Saurashtra will now have to cover a distance of 110 km instead of 60 km to go from Tarapur to Padra.
Vehicles coming from Saurashtra have to cross the Vasad Mahi river bridge via Borsad and then through Golden Chowkdi to National Highway via Makarpura GIDC and then Atladara route to Padara Jambusar and Bharuch. On this route, drivers also have to pass through Vadodara city. Due to which, instead of the distance of 25 to 30 km from Borsad to Padara, it has become mandatory for the drivers to cover a distance of more than the estimated 80 km. While from Tarapur to Padara, instead of 60 km, a situation has arisen of covering a distance of 110 km. Due to which the cost of diesel or petrol will also increase, as well as the time will also increase because, until the new bridge is built, the vehicle traffic connecting Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, especially cargo vehicles, is likely to become very expensive.
After the Gambhira bridge accident, it is too late to create problems for heavy and commercial vehicles. The closure of Umeta and Gambhira bridges has resulted in thousands of vehicles getting stuck on two routes from Saurashtra to Central Gujarat, Surat and Mumbai. Now all the traffic is choosing Anand Express Highway or National Highway No. 48 via Tarapur Chowkadi Valsad. Due to heavy vehicles plying on such single lane roads, traffic jams are frequently occurring on the road.
There is a constant traffic jam on Samarkha Road entering the Express Highway from Anand city. Because, now the expressway is becoming easier for heavy vehicles going to Central Gujarat, including transport trucks and tankers. Also, National Highway No. 48 is also being used, but due to long queues at the toll booth near Vasad, most of the drivers are using the expressway. Motorists travelling from Bagodra in Saurashtra to Mumbai and Surat are now using the Tarapur to Bandhani Chowkadi Valsad Karamsad route, which has increased heavy vehicle traffic and is likely to continue to cause traffic problems in Anand district until a new bridge is built.
– Heavy vehicle traffic has increased on the Bandhani, Valsan, Anand route due to the absence of two toll booths.
Heavy vehicles travelling from Tarapur Chowkadi to Anand and Vasad come to only one toll booth. While going from Tarapur to Vasad via Borsad, since there is another toll booth at Dabhasi, motorists have to pay two tolls. To avoid this, it seems they are taking the shortcut route of Bandhani Chowkadi Valsan Anand.
Jambuwa and Bamangam bridges causing traffic problems near Vadodara on Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway are also dangerous

Jambuwa and Bamangam bridges causing traffic problems near Vadodara on Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway are also dangerous
Vadodara: Two bridges, which often cause traffic jams for 10 to 15 kilometers near Vadodara on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway, are also in a dangerous condition, so the administration has to pay serious attention.
The Jambuwa bridge going from Vadodara to Karjan is narrow and in a dilapidated condition. At the same time, the narrow bridge of Bamangam after the bridge is also in a similar condition. As a result, people fear that both these bridges can cause an accident anytime.
Some time ago, the river was visible below after the landslide on the Bamangam bridge, increasing the danger for two-wheeler riders. At the same time, the traffic problem also became more complicated.
It is worth noting that the surrounding villagers are also troubled due to the said narrow bridge and they have also put up barricades to prevent outside vehicles from passing through the village.

Mujpur – Gambhira Bridge Accident: Not only the bridge, the path of dreams of many students also collapsed
The collapse of the Mujpur – Gambhira bridge directly affected the daily life of the entire area and the education of the students
The arrangement of special vehicles for the students and the repair of the bridge is being demanded by the public without wasting time.
The collapse of the important Mujpur-Gambari bridge connecting Padra taluka to other areas including Bhadran and Borsad of Anand district has badly affected the daily life of the entire area. Especially, this incident will have a direct impact on the education of the students going to study in colleges and schools from Padra, Jambusar to Bhadran and Borsad. Since in case of collapse of this bridge there would be no
There is no alternative road or public transport system, so the reopening of this road may take a long time. If State Transport Corporation buses or private vehicles are not arranged immediately for students going from Padra, Miyagam, Jambusar to Bhadran and Borsad, the future of thousands of students will be in danger.
Traffic diverted to 36-year-old Umeta bridge after collapse of 31-year-old Gambhira bridge

Traffic diverted to 36-year-old Umeta bridge after collapse of 31-year-old Gambhira bridge
The administration’s decision to divert traffic towards the 36-year-old Umeta bridge after the collapse of the 31-year-old Mujpur-Gambira bridge has created a situation that has put many lives at risk.
The Mujpur-Gambira bridge built in 1994 has cut off direct connectivity between several villages including Bhadran, Anklav Borsad, Dabhasa, Padra, Muwal. Until this bridge becomes operational, people will have to take a very long detour to Umeta and Vasad bridges. Along with this, the studies of students may also be affected. On the other hand, the administration is already working on the bridge by stopping the movement of vehicles on the Umeta bridge and the question of redevelopment or a new bridge is pending. The Umeta bridge was constructed by the PWD department in the year 1989. Today the condition of the bridge is so bad that all the rods of the bridge structure are visible. This has been reported several times. But, the administration is not behind. And due to the poor quality of work on the bridge, pothole patchwork is done every six months. Ignoring the poor structure of the Umeta bridge is like inviting another disaster. If the Umeta bridge is affected, direct connectivity with villages including Sherkhi, Bhayli, Padra, Borsad Anklav is likely to be disrupted. It is important to remind you that till the reopening of the Gambhira bridge, the Additional District Magistrate has asked small vehicles to use the Umeta bridge and heavy vehicles to use the Vasad route, and heavy vehicles have been banned from using the Umeta bridge.

Gambhira bridge accident: Expressing condolences is not just a formality, leaders copied-pasted messages
Vadodara bridge collapse news: 13 people have died tragically due to the collapse of Gambhira bridge between Padra-Jambusar. This incident has once again exposed the gross negligence and carelessness of the administration. Many BJP leaders, ministers and workers, including the Chief Minister, expressed grief over the incident by posting on social media, but it was clearly visible that a formality was completed in posting it. Because all the messages are the same. It is clear that no one even tried to write with their originality.
CM’s ‘Save Lulo’
After the accident, the Chief Minister posted on the social media platform ‘X’, “The accident caused by the collapse of one of the 23 spans of the Gambhira bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara is tragic. I pray for the peace of the souls of those killed in this accident.” The opposition has called this statement ‘Save Lulo’ because it only expressed condolences instead of taking responsibility.
Formalities of BJP leaders
After the Chief Minister, many other BJP leaders like Purushottam Rupala, Rishikesh Patel, Purnesh Modi, Balvantsinh Rajput, Dhaval Patel, Vinod Chavda, Vishal Thackeray, Bhushan Ashok Bhatt, Kalpesh Patel etc. also expressed their grief by copying and pasting the same clichéd message verbatim. It was clearly visible that only formalities were completed.
The BJP leader has become a victim of massive ridicule and criticism on social media for such a clichéd response. People are raising questions that when common citizens are losing their lives, why are the leaders of the ruling party dealing with such a serious incident with just a copy-paste message? This incident has once again raised a big question mark on the administration’s negligence regarding the maintenance and safety of infrastructure in Gujarat.

Warning was also given on social media
Surprisingly, an aware citizen posted a video on social media platform ‘X’ on June 27, 2023 and warned about this bridge. He tagged the media including the Chief Minister, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and wrote, ‘Breaking news like Morbi will come for you too. Be ready for coverage.’ Despite this clear and serious warning, the system did not pay attention to its seriousness.
Administration inactive despite prior warning
Mujpur District Panchayat member Harshadsingh Chandubhai Parmar wrote a letter to the District Collector and Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department on August 4, 2022, drawing attention to the dangerous condition of the bridge. He clearly stated that the pillars of the bridge are defective, tremors are felt while passing through the bridge and its surface is constantly deteriorating. The letter clearly warns that if any kind of loss of life occurs in the future, the administration will be solely responsible for it.
Despite this serious memorandum from Harshadsingh Parmar, the administration did not declare the bridge dangerous and did not close it for vehicular traffic. Not only this, no investigation or test report was also issued regarding the safety of the bridge, as a result of which this horrific accident happened today and innocent people lost their lives.
Today’s accident can clearly be called a man-made disaster, because despite having ample evidence of the dilapidated condition of the bridge, they failed to take timely and appropriate action. This incident has created a need to take strict action against the responsible officials and to immediately inspect such dilapidated bridges across the state.

BJP is doing its will as if it considers the public as its slaves: Shankarsinh Vaghela
In 30 years of rule, BJP’s corruption has become a python and is slowly swallowing the whole of Gujarat. Today BJP is doing its will as if it considers the public as its slaves. And when the public forgets to ask questions, the courage of such careless rulers reaches the seventh sky. As a result, the common people die.
Death is looming on the roads and bridges of Gujarat under corrupt BJP rule: AAP
Gujarat AAP president Ishudan Gadhvi called the BJP government corrupt
Or and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister. Giving his message on social media, he said that the Gambhira bridge near Mujpur in Padra has collapsed. As a soldier of Aam Aadmi Party, I have a question to the government and BJP leaders. The public pays tax so that you do good management, and in the name of management they give you money. You eat up that money by doing corruption and the public also dies.
The lives of innocent people have no value in BJP rule. How long will these people continue to be victims of BJP’s corruption. Along with this, we want to tell the Chief Minister that politics does not run with naivety, even the house does not run with naivety. If you are not able to run this state, then you should resign. People are dying in your rule. Death is looming on the roads and bridges of Gujarat in the corrupt BJP rule.
The collapse of the Gambhira bridge is not an accident but the result of government negligence: Amit Chavda
Gujarat Congress leader Amit Chavda has described the collapse of the Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand districts as not just an accident but the result of serious negligence of the Gujarat government. If the bridge is dangerous, it should be closed. Why does the government wake up after such incidents? Giving his reaction on the social media platform ‘x’, he has demanded strict action from the government in this matter.
Amit Chavda has said in his message that ‘the collapse of the Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara-Anand is not an accident but the result of the negligence of the Gujarat government.’ He has demanded from the government that, ‘The government should immediately inspect all the bridges across Gujarat and make their safety certificates available to the public on the public domain.’
The Congress leader paid tribute to the departed souls who lost their lives in the accident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. After this incident, questions have been raised on the safety and maintenance of bridges across the state.
Apart from this, the Congress leader also raised questions on the potholes and landslides in the state after the rains and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister. The public is troubled by the potholes and landslides caused by corruption on the roads across the state and the government does not take any action even after the memorandum and complaints of the public. This is why accidents happen and people lose their lives. Dada.. if your heart is really full of ‘tenderness’, then show ‘firmness’ and resign along with the entire (inefficient) cabinet.
When the British built bridges in India, they also wrote the date of construction of the bridge and the date of completion of the bridge on a big board. But due to the sin of this corrupt government, there is no investigation as to when the bridge was built, how long it will last and what is its condition. Due to this, today the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge connecting Anand-Vadodara district collapsed, in which some innocent people lost their lives and many were injured.

8 major accidents in Gujarat, in which the government’s ‘strict steps’ remained limited to paper only
Major accidents keep happening in Gujarat and unfortunately, the negligence and inaction of the system comes to the fore every time. Even in incidents that could have been easily avoided, nothing is given except the assurance of “strict action” and “strict action”. Promises are made that such incidents will not happen in future, but the reality is something else.
Major accidents in the past and ‘strict action’ by the administration
Let’s take a look at some major incidents that happened before the Gambhira Bridge accident, where the administration had ordered strict action:
Kankaria ride accident (2019):
Some people died and many were injured when a joyride collapsed at Kankaria amusement park in Ahmedabad. In this incident, serious questions were raised on the maintenance and safety standards of the ride. At that time too, strict action was assured against those responsible.

Bharuch Hospital Fire incident (2021)
Bharuch Kalyan Hospital, a hospital dedicated to COVID-19 patients. A total of 18 people, including at least 16 COVID-19 patients and 2 nurses, died in the fire. The fire broke out in the COVID-19 ward of the hospital. The exact cause of the fire is not yet clear, but fire safety rules were followed.
Questions were raised about power failure. Following this incident, fire safety audits and strict adherence to rules were ordered in hospitals across the state.
Ahmedabad Shrey Hospital Fire Tragedy (2020):
During the Covid pandemic, fire broke out in hospitals in Bharuch and Ahmedabad, killing patients. These incidents highlighted the shortcomings of fire safety in hospitals and investigations and action were ordered in both the cases.
Morbi Suspension Bridge Tragedy (2022):
The collapse of the historic suspension bridge over the Machhu river in Morbi resulted in the death of more than 130 people, which was a horrific tragedy. There was a clear negligence in the repair and maintenance of the bridge. A massive investigation and strict action were also ordered after this tragedy.
Vadodara Harni Boat Accident (2024):
Several innocent children and teachers lost their lives when a boat carrying school children capsized in Harni Lake in Vadodara.

More than 30 people lost their lives in a massive fire at a TRP game zone in Rajkot. It was found that this game zone was running illegally and did not follow fire safety rules. Even after this tragedy, strict action has been ordered on game zones and such places across the state.
Gambhir Bridge Accident on Mahisagar River (July 2025):
More than 10 people died and many vehicles fell into the river due to the collapse of the Gambhira bridge between Padra-Jambusar in Vadodara. Questions are being raised on the maintenance and quality of this bridge and once again there is talk of taking ‘strict action’.
Is ‘strict action’ only on paper?
All these tragedies follow a similar pattern. An accident happens, the system sleeps, bodies pile up, the opposition attacks, and finally the government gives assurances of “strict action” and “vigilance to prevent such incidents in future”. But the question is, are these strict measures actually taken? Are those responsible given permanent punishment? And most importantly, are any lessons learnt from these incidents and concrete steps taken to prevent such tragedies in future? Let’s hope the Gambhira bridge accident at least wakes up the system and such horrific incidents never happen again in Gujarat. (Google translation from Gujarati)
