Lothal Port Museum
National Maritime Heritage Complex – The National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) is becoming a center of learning and understanding of India’s diverse maritime history. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4500 crore, the NMHC campus is spread over an area of 400 acres. The world’s tallest lighthouse museum, Asia’s largest underwater maritime museum and India’s Naval Museum are under construction.
Marine Gallery: An MoU was signed with the Indian Navy and Coast Guard for “Visit of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard”.
Will showcase India’s rich and diverse maritime heritage. Sagarmala is one of the projects under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and is the largest maritime museum complex in the world.
The Government of Gujarat has allotted 375 acres of land for this project. In addition, an additional 25 acres of land has been earmarked for the development of staff quarters; 4 laning of road from State Highway to NMHC project site is in progress; Narmada water supply work has been completed from about 25 km away; The work of laying about 17 km transmission lines is in progress and funds are being provided for setting up of 66 KV GIS substation, which is in progress and the state government has contributed Rs 150 crore for infrastructure development.
Funding from public and private organizations or various organizations and plans to develop a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) fund are being planned. Major ports of India are contributing Rs 209 crore.
This will take a step forward towards 2030. It will position India on the global front and educate the people of the country about the rich heritage of our maritime domain.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is spending 4500 crores and 5 thousand crores for the new building with the cost of 400 acres of land. But Gujarat has 40 museums and 1200 unique sites. Modi did nothing for its development for 23 years.
project status
Construction of 1.58 km 4 lane road from Sargwada village to project site is nearing completion. The work of 25 kilometer water supply line and water tank of 10 lakh liters capacity has been completed. The physical progress of Phase 1A is more than 30%. Gallery tenders have been issued for the first 5 galleries and tenders for Navy (Marine) Gallery and Lothal Town are in the final stages of preparation. Exclusive pink stone quarries have been identified from Jodhpur and these will be used for the construction of NHMC. The museums have tie-ups with various state departments and institutions for the artefacts.
The NHMC is being developed as a first of its kind museum dedicated to the maritime heritage of India. It will not only showcase India’s rich and diverse maritime heritage, but also highlight our country’s strong maritime history and vibrant coastal tradition, thereby enhancing the image of India’s maritime heritage on the international stage.
It may be noted that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in its commitment to develop the port sector in the country, has identified 74 projects worth Rs 57,000 crore under the Sagarmala program in Gujarat. Of these, 15 projects worth Rs 9,000 crore have been completed; 33 projects worth over Rs 25,000 crore are under implementation and 26 projects worth Rs 22,700 crore are under development. Central ministries, major ports, state maritime boards and other state agencies jointly implement these projects.
Project reviewed. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working on this project in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat. Rs 3500 crore project in the historical Indus Valley Culture Zone of Lothal (Gujarat) under Sagarmala scheme of the Ministry.
India has a rich maritime history. In ancient times, Dholavira and Lothal were prominent among them.
Many unique creations like heritage theme parks, museum themed hotels and marine themed eco-resorts are coming up.
The rich and diverse maritime pride of India is being showcased. It is the country’s first maritime heritage project. Enhance the image of India’s maritime heritage on the international platform.
Being developed as a world class international tourist destination.
There will be amusement parks etc. Here you will get a glimpse of the country’s maritime heritage from ancient times to modern times.
Lothal was one of the major cities of the Harappan civilization before 2400 BCE in the important western state of Gujarat, India. Archaeological excavations have revealed that Lothal had a man-made dock 5000 years ago. Keeping in view the historical importance of Lothal, the Maritime Heritage Complex will be at such an important location and will help it to become an exceptional and unique Maritime Heritage Area.
NMHC proposes to have a pavilion for each of the Coastal States and Union Territories (UTs) of India to showcase the artefacts/maritime heritage of the States and Union Territories. Each coastal state and union territory will present its unique cultural identity as well as tangible and intangible heritage.
The ancient city is a revival of Lothal, which was one of the major cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization around 2400 BCE.
The following types of digital experiences are also planned for the visitors:

3. Touch Screen Kiosk
4. Short films on important events in maritime history.
Marine and Naval Theme Park, Memorial Park, Climate ChangeEng Theme Park, Adventure and Entertainment Theme Park etc. will be developed at NMHC through private-private partnership, which will provide a complete package and excellent experience to the visitors.
