Indian Railways is charging an additional fee of Rs 50 from each to take migrant laborers to their homes. The BJP government of Karnataka has announced to take double the rent from the migrant laborers returning home. The logic behind it is that the vehicles from which these people will be sent will return empty. The mystery of this ‘economic prudence’ was yet to be solved that even the ‘puzzle’ of the PM Cares Fund is getting confused.
According to an estimate, more than Rs 6,000 crore had been donated by the people within a week of his announcement. This is more than three times the total donations of Rs 2,119 crore received in the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) between 2014-15 to 2018-19. 1,594.87 crore was spent from PMNRF during that period.
The PMNRF is used to provide immediate relief to the families of those killed in natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, major accidents and riots. PMNRF was established in 1948. Its total corpus is Rs 3,800 crore.
