Ahmedabad: The BJP government, which has been harping on the fact that there is no strong opposition party in Gujarat, has now started preparing for the Gujarat Assembly elections, but if it is busy fighting on many issues including education, corruption and electricity and water, then Congress will also contest the elections. After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, there was no face in Gujarat BJP who could take charge of Gujarat. Vijay Rupani hit the jackpot after the Patidar reservation movement ousted Anandibehan Patel from power, but due to an unstable government, BJP was barely able to form the government with 99 seats in the 2017 elections. The cities of Gujarat have saved the honor of BJP. It lost 16 seats in the 2012 assembly elections. Whereas Congress increased its account by 16 seats by securing 77 seats.
2019 by-elections, BJP captured 07 out of 10 seats.
After the 2017 assembly elections, 10 seats were up for election due to resignations of MLAs, party defection and Lok Sabha elections. These elections were held in April and October. Out of 10 seats, 06 seats belonged to Congress. Whereas 04 seats belonged to BJP. But after these elections, 07 seats went to BJP’s account and thus Congress lost three seats.
1. Congress MLA from Dhangdhra Parshottam Sabariya resigned from Congress and contested from BJP and defeated Congress candidate Dinesh Patel by 34,280 votes. Both got 99,252 and 64,972 votes respectively. Whose percentage was 56.32 and 36.87.
2. Congress MLA from Jamnagar village Vallabh Dharaviya resigned from Congress and joined BJP. BJP has given ticket to the current Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel from this seat in the by-election. Raghavji Patel defeated Congress candidate Jayanti Sabha by 33,022 votes. Raghavji Patel got 88,254 votes while Jayanti Sabha got 55,232 votes. Ban got 58.14 and 36.39 percent votes respectively. It is noteworthy that Raghavji Patel had won this seat from Congress in 2012 and lost from BJP in 2017.
3. Congress MLA from Manavadar Jawahar Chavda has resigned and joined BJP. BJP gave ticket to Jawahar Chavda in the by-election. Jawahar Chavda got 78,491 votes. Congress candidate Arvind Ladani got 68,732 votes. In this way Jawahar Chavda won by 9,759 votes. Both got 52.01 and 45.54 percent votes respectively. Later Jawahar Chavda was made the Tourism Minister.
4. Congress MLA Ashaben Patel left the party and joined BJP. BJP made him contest again from Unjha seat. Ashaben Patel got 77,459 votes. While Congress candidate Kantibhai Patel got 54,387 votes. However, MLA Asha Patel died in December 2021 and the Unjha seat fell vacant.
5. Radhanpur’s Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor changed sides and joined BJP. BJP gave him ticket in the by-election. But Congress MLA Raghu Desai secured 77,410 votes and defeated Alpesh Thakor by 3807 votes. Alpesh Thakor got 73,603 votes in these elections. Both got 45.52 percent and 43.28 percent votes respectively. In this way Alpesh Thakor was unfortunate.
6. Congress MLA from Baid, Dhawal Singh Jhala also changed sides and joined BJP. BJP had also given him ticket in the by-election. But in the by-election, Congress candidate Jashubhai Patel got 65,597 votes, while Dhawal Singh Jhala got 64,854 votes. Thus Dhawal Singh Jhala lost by a slight margin of 743 votes. Both got 46.46 percent and 45.93 percent votes respectively.
7. BJP gave Lok Sabha ticket to Tharad BJP MLA Parbat Patel and he was elected in Lok Sabha 2019. By-election was held on the vacant seat. In this by-election, Congress candidate Gulab Singh Rajput got 72,959 votes. While BJP candidate Jivraj Patel got 66,587 votes. In this way Congress defeated BJP by 6372 votes. Congress got 48.55% votes and BJP 44.31% votes.
08. In 2019, a by-election was held on the seat vacated after the election of BJP’s Kheralu MLA Bharat Singh Dabhi to the Lok Sabha. In which BJP gave ticket to Ajmalji Thakor, he got 60,875 votes, while Congress candidate Thakor Babuji got 31,784 votes. Thus Ajmalji won by 29,091 votes. Both the candidates got 62.75 percent and 32.78 percent votes respectively.
09. Amraiwadi MLA Hasmukh Patel was given Lok Sabha ticket from Ahmedabad East by BJP in place of Paresh Rawal in 2019, he won. Therefore, when the Amraiwadi seat became vacant, by-election was held there. BJP candidate Jagdish Patel got 48,657 votes while Congress candidate Dharmendra Patel got 43,129 votes. In this way both got 50.24 and 44.53 percent votes respectively.
10. Ratan Singh Rathore was elected as an independent candidate from Lunawada constituency in the 2017 assembly elections. The BJP, which had a slight lead in the assembly, gave the Lok Sabha ticket to Ratan Singh Rathore in 2018. In such a situation, when this seat became vacant, BJP gave the ticket to Jignesh Kumar Sevak.Who got 67,391 votes. While Congress candidate Gulab Singh Chauhan got 55,439 votes. Both got 49.02 and 40.32 percent votes respectively.
2019 Lok Sabha elections is the first big challenge
In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, it was believed that the moderate BJP would get less seats in the Lok Sabha elections, but in order to make a Gujarati Prime Minister at the Centre, Gujaratis gave all the 26 Lok Sabha seats of Gujarat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Abolition of Article 370 from Kashmir, Triple Talaq Bill, air strikes on Pakistan, Citizenship Amendment Act, Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Bima Yojana, Jan Dhan Account, Ram Mandir issue etc. inspired people to vote for Narendra Modi.
Rajya Sabha elections and BJP’s brutality
After the Lok Sabha elections, Rajya Sabha elections were a big challenge for State President Jitu Vaghani in 2020. BJP members were to be sent to Rajya Sabha with the votes of less MLAs. Apart from this, when BJP was less in terms of numbers in Rajya Sabha, BJP adopted the policy of sabotage in Congress and brought five Congress MLAs to BJP. A candidate needed 35 votes to win. In the fight for four seats, BJP’s Narhari Amin, Abhay Bhardwaj and Ramilaben Bara managed to enter the Rajya Sabha, while Congress’s Shaktisinh Gohil managed to enter the Rajya Sabha.

After Jitu Vaghani stepped down from the post of BJP state president, CR Patil, who is an MP from Navsari and a confidant of Narendra Modi, entered as the state president. The power struggle started as soon as CR Patil arrived. There was resentment in BJP too, but due to the blessings of the Centre, no one could do anything and the results of their decisions were visible. The first challenge for him was the by-elections to be held on 08 seats of Gujarat. These eight assembly seats include Abdasa, Limbdi, Morbi, Dhari, Gadda, Karjan, Dang and Kaprada. All the five MLAs who left Congress and joined BJP, Pradyumansingh Jadeja, Brijesh Merja, Javi Kakadiya, Akshay Patel and Jitu Chaudhary were given tickets from BJP in the last assembly. All those candidates won. Apart from this, BJP candidates also won three other seats.

November-2020 by-election results
1. In Abdasa seat, Pradhumna Singh Jadeja of BJP defeated Dr. Shantilal Senghani of Congress by 36778 votes. Both the candidates got 71,848 and 35,070 votes respectively.
2. In Limbdi, BJP’s Kirit Singh Rana defeated Congress’s Chetanbhai Khachar by 32,050 votes. Both got 88,928 and 56,878 votes respectively.
3.BJP’s Brijesh Merja defeated Congress’s Jayantilal Patel by 4,649 votes from Morbi. Both got 64,711 and 60,062 votes respectively.
4. BJP candidate J.V. on Dhari seat. Kakadiya defeated Suresh Kotadiya of Congress by 17209 votes. Both got 49,695 and 32,592 votes respectively.
5. At Gadhada seat, Atmaram Parmar of BJP defeated Mohan Solanki of Congress by 23295 votes. Both got 71,912 and 48,617 votes respectively.
6. From Karjan Assembly seat, BJP candidate Akshay Patel defeated Congress candidate Kirit Singh Jadeja by 16,425 votes. Both the candidates got 76,958 and 60,533 votes respectively.
7. From Dang assembly seat, BJP’s Vijay Patel defeated Congress’s Suryakant Gavit by 60,095 votes. Both got 94,006 and 33,911 votes respectively.
8. In Kaprada assembly seat, BJP’s Jitu Chaudhary defeated Congress’s Babubhai Patel by 47,066 votes. Both got 1,12,941 and 65,875 votes respectively.
Unopposed Rajya Sabha Election 2021
There are 11 Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat. Out of which both the posts became vacant after the demise of Congress leader Ahmed Patel and BJP Rajya Sabha member Abhay Bhardwaj. On these two, BJP has fielded Ram Mokaria and Dineshchandra Anavadia in the elections to be held in early 2021. Congress became weak with the departure of Ahmed Patel. Both BJP candidates were elected unopposed.
Rise of third front Aam Aadmi Party in Gujarat
By-elections for 08 seats of Gujarat Assembly and elections for 6 municipalities in the state were held between the first and second wave of Corona. Campaigning for the parties was a big challenge. Despite this, BJP ignored people’s concerns and campaigned quietly. Congress criticized the Corona vaccine while raising the issue. Urban voters are also in favor of BJP. There were a total of 144 wards and 576 seats in the 6 municipal corporation elections. Out of which BJP won 483 seats. Whereas Congress was reduced to only 55 seats. Other parties got 38 seats. 6 Municipal Corporation Election Results
1. Ahmedabad, the largest municipality of Gujarat, has 48 wards and 192 seats. Out of which, in Muslim dominated areas, BJP got 159 seats, Congress 25 seats and AIMIM 07 seats. Others got 01 seats.
2. Congress could not even open an account in Surat Municipal Corporation. Out of 120 seats in 30 wards of Surat, BJP won 93 seats while Aam Aadmi Party won 27 seats.
3. Out of 76 seats in 19 wards of Vadodara, BJP won 69 seats and Congress won 07 seats.
4. Rajkot cityOut of 72 seats in 18 wards of the corporation, BJP won 68, Aam Aadmi Party 02 and Congress 02 seats.
5. Out of 64 seats in 16 wards of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, BJP won 50 seats, Congress 11 seats and BSP 03 seats.
6. Out of 52 seats in 13 wards of Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation, BJP won 44 seats, while Congress won 08 seats.

Municipal Corporation Elections: After this, local self-government elections started in Gujarat. Saffron waved in this also. BJP won 75 out of 81 municipalities. Congress won only in 04 municipalities. BJP captured all 31 district panchayats. While out of 231 taluka panchayats, BJP won 196 taluka panchayats and Congress won 18 taluka panchayats, BJP still won power in those panchayats where it had not got power by agreement. Out of 8470 Panchayat seats, BJP won 6236 seats, Congress won 1805 seats while Aam Aadmi Party won 42 seats. However, BJP claimed that BJP has support in 90 percent of the panchayats.
Morvahaduff Assembly by-election
After the Local Swaraj elections, Bhupendra Khant was an independent candidate MLA from Morwa Hadaf assembly seat of Panchmahal district. This seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The High Court invalidated the tribal certificate of Bhupendra Khant. Also, after the death of Bhupendra Khant in January 2021, by-election was held on this seat. In which Nimisha Suthar of BJP defeated Suresh Katara of Congress by securing 67457 votes. Out of total 93,179 votes, Suresh Katara got 21,808 votes.
Rupani’s resignation
The rift between BJP state president CR Patil, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel was increasing. After the local self-governance elections in Teva, the second wave of Corona has exposed the Gujarat government which was flying in the air. In the second wave of Corona, many Gujaratis died without oxygen. Left to the mercy of Gujarat authorities. People died on the doorstep of hospitals because of the stupidity of officials who strictly enforced the rules. Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation Elections
The first elections of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation were held in October 2021 under the leadership of Bhupendra Patel as Chief Minister. Since the formation of this municipality, Congress was in control of it, but this time the Aam Aadmi Party seems to have the upper hand. Actually, Aam Aadmi Party defeated Congress and gave victory to BJP. In the third term of the Municipal Corporation, out of 44 seats in 11 wards of Gandhinagar, BJP won 41 seats, Congress 02 seats and Aam Aadmi Party 01 seat.
Situation before 2022 elections
BJP has declared the year 2022 as the election year. BJP has succeeded in attracting senior Congress leaders into its party. Even though Congress is cornering the new ministers of BJP in the Assembly, outside the command of the government is in the hands of the organization. From Delhi to Gujarat, the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has increased. The old jogis have been shown their place.
