31st October is the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He played an important role in establishing Saurashtra state by merging 222 states of Saurashtra. After independence on 15 August 1947, the agreement to form the United State of Saurashtra was signed in Rajkot on 22-1-1949. The first king of the state was Maharaja Digvijaysinghji of Jamnagar. Ushrangarai Dhebar was appointed as the first Chief Minister. In the swearing-in ceremony of the new state, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel administered the oath of office to Maharaja Digvijaysinghji of Jamnagar as the Chief Minister.
After the formation of Saurashtra State, its first secretariat was started at Junagadh House (Circuit House). Independent High Court of Saurashtra State was started in Rajkot. The Constituent Assembly of Saurashtra began in Connaught Hall.
Sardar Saheb’s role in the freedom struggle during the Rajshahi period included Arzi Hukumat in Junagadh, Limbdi Satyagraha, Rajkot Satyagraha, Somnath Temple reconstruction work.
Sardar Patel Rashtra Chetna Sammelan was organized in Ahmedabad on 31 November 2023 on the occasion of the 149th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. More than 50 senior royals of the country, including descendants of Maharana Pratap and Chhatrapati Shiv Maharaj, were felicitated in the city area.
In this programme, the descendants of Maharana Pratap and the former royal families of Udaipur, Gondal State and Wankaner State were welcomed with drums. Former royals and their descendants who arrived from across the country paid floral tributes to the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. All the former royal families or descendants also performed Shastra Puja. Sardar Patel’s statue was honored by Shaul Odhadi. 56 former royals or their descendants were invited.
