The pilot project of telemedicine in Patan, Gujarat, which started in 2003, has now been implemented across the state of Gujarat. Telemedicine services are providing expert medical consultation to people living in remote areas of the state. In two years, 61 lakh patients in the state took telemedicine – tele consultation. 10 crore people in the country and 30 lakh people in Gujarat were helped by online doctors in 2023.

Telemedicine System in Gujarat Gujarat is actively adopting telemedicine to improve access and delivery of healthcare, especially in rural and backward areas. Patients can consult doctors from the comfort of their homes, reducing travel time, cost and waiting room delays. The cost of healthcare can be reduced. Gujarat uses the national e-Sanjeevani platform, which provides patient-to-doctor (e-Sanjeevani OPD) and doctor-to-doctor (e-Sanjeevani AB-HWC) telemedicine.

Connects patients to specialists using a hub-and-spoke model.

e-Sanjeevani OPD allows individuals to access outpatient services from the comfort of their homes through a mobile app.

Gujarat was the first state to implement digital health cards (ABHA cards) for school children. These cards track health data and aim to improve monitoring of nutrition and cognitive development. According to a report by All Gujarat News, the Gujarat government has planned a pilot project for tele-ICU services, in which mobile kiosks with audio and video facilities are used to connect critically ill patients in rural ICUs to specialists in urban centres. Gujarat’s healthcare system provides an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh under the “Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya-Maa” scheme. 2 crore people were Ayushman card holders. 8 lakh cataract operations have been performed in a short period of two years from February 2022. There is a day-care chemotherapy centre for cancer. 1 lakh chemotherapy sessions are performed. Gujarat is the first state to introduce radiotherapy treatment with the help of robotic machines like Cyber Knife in cancer hospitals. 2 years ago, 5500 MBBS seats in 31 medical colleges of the state increased to 7050 in 40 medical colleges.

There are 8800 health and wellness centers. Smart Referral App

“Smart Referral App” has been created. A pilot project has been started in April 2023 under the Smart Referral App. This app works to make emergency services easy and efficient for high-risk pregnant women, newborns, patients suffering from serious diseases. According to a report by All Gujarat News, this app shows real-time information of important services like hospital doctors, ICU facilities, oxygen availability, blood availability. Which is useful for both the patient and the doctor in emergency treatment. 93 Hospitals

The Health Department has launched the “Patient Healthcare Reform Mission” in 93 hospitals including 6 government medical colleges, 8 GMERS colleges, 21 district hospitals and 58 sub-district hospitals in the state. Under the “Shrestha” Shrestha Gujarat project, a grant of US$500 million has been allocated. Of which US$350 million was provided by the World Bank and the remaining cost was borne by the state government.
