Last year, more than 25 lakh cases of TB were reported in India, the highest in six decades.

According to government data, about 25,50,000 cases of tuberculosis (TB) were reported in India last year, the highest since the TB control program was started in the 60s. TB cases have increased by 64% in the last nine years.

Thus, on an average 16 people die of TB every day in the state. More than 18 thousand people have died in Gujarat in three years. This increasing mortality rate of TB is worrying as today is ‘World TB Day’.

TB cases have increased by 25 percent in the last two years alone
Tuberculosis cases are increasing alarmingly in Gujarat. From January 1 to March 23 this year, 22,095 cases of TB have been reported in government hospitals, while 10,434 cases have been reported in private hospitals. In such a situation, an average of 399 new cases of TB have been reported in Gujarat this year. There has been a 25 percent increase in TB cases in the last two years itself. The number of TB patients increased to 1,44,715. At the end of the year 2022, a total of 1,51,912 TB patients were reported. M, there has been a 25 percent increase in TB patients in the state in two years. From January to October last year, there were a total of 1,25,786 TB patients in Gujarat. According to the Lok Sabha report, 26126 patients have been registered in the last three months of last year.

TB states

Among the states that reported the highest number of TB cases last year, Uttar Pradesh topped with 5.22 lakh, Maharashtra second with 2.34 lakh, Madhya Pradesh third with 1.86 lakh, Rajasthan fourth with 1.69 lakh and Bihar fifth with 1.61 lakh and Gujarat ranked sixth. Gujarat had 6870 TB deaths in 2020, 5472 in 2021 and 5764 in 2022 and 6543 in 2023. In this way, more than 25 thousand people lost their lives in 4 years.

About 32% of all TB cases reported in the country in 2023 came from the private healthcare sector. Out of the 25,50,000 cases, 0.84 lakh were from the private sector, which is 17% more than last year. There has been a sharp increase in private sector cases as compared to 2014 – 38,596 cases were reported in 2013.

Overall, TB cases have increased by 64% in the last nine years of Modi rule. More TB cases are being reported in Gujarat as compared to other states of the country. There was a 21% increase in Uttar Pradesh, 15% in Bihar but Gujarat saw a 25% increase.

Modi assured the country that tuberculosis will be eradicated by 2025.

According to the Global TB Report 2023 published by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the incidence of tuberculosis in India has decreased by 16% from 237 per 100,000 population in 2015 to 199 per 100,000 population in 2022. During the same period, the mortality rate from TB decreased by 23% from 28 per 100,000 population in 2015 to 18 per 100,000 population in 2022.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the One World TB Summit at Rudraksh Convention Centre in Varanasi. He also launched various initiatives including TB Free Panchayats, Short TB Preventive Treatment (TPT), Family-Centered Care Model for TB and release of India’s Annual TB Report 2023. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of National Centre for Disease Control and High Prevention Laboratory and inaugurated the site for Metropolitan Public Health Surveillance Unit in Varanasi. The Prime Minister also presented awards to selected States/UTs and districts for progress towards TB elimination. Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir at the State/UT level and Nilgiris, Pulwama and Anantnag at the district level were the award recipients.

Dr. Lucica Deetoo, Executive Director, Stop TB remarked that the Summit is being held in Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in the world, to discuss the world’s thousand-year-old disease, Tuberculosis or TB. She said that the TB burden in India is very high but with great planning, ambition and great implementation of activities, she also underlined the adoption of global well-being of India’s G20 Presidency and explained the importance of the theme – One World One Health. He said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India is on the path to eliminate TB by 2025. He said that due to the efforts of countries like India, for the first time in history, the number of people not getting diagnosed and treated for TB has come down to less than 30 lakhs. He praised India’s scale in tackling TB and the TB Free India initiative and expressed confidence that India will be able to eradicate TB by 2025.

With their support, India will eliminate TB by 2025. He also informed about the UN High-Level Meeting on TB to be held on September 22 during the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Prime Minister was also urged to attend the meeting. He also urged the Prime Minister to lead and inspire other world leaders in this fight against TB.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister expressed happiness that the One World TB Summit is being held in Varanasi and said that he is also the Member of Parliament from the city. He underlined that the city of Kashi is like an eternal stream that has witnessed the toil and efforts of humanity for thousands of years. He said, “No matter what the obstacles, Kashi has always proved that new paths are made with ‘Sabka Vishwas’ (everyone’s efforts).” He expressed confidence that Kashi will infuse new energy towards global initiatives in the fight against diseases like TB.

The Prime Minister emphasized that as a country, India’s ideology can be reflected in the spirit of Vasudev Kutumbakam, which means the whole world is one family. This ancient ideology offers an integrated approach and integrated solutions for today’s advanced world, the Prime Minister said. He said that India, as G20 Chair, has chosen the theme of ‘One Family, One World, One Future’ based on such beliefs. “The theme of G20 is Resolve for a Shared Future for the Whole World,” the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister said that India has been promoting the vision of ‘One Earth, One Health’ in the world and emphasized that it is realizing the vision of global well-being with the One World TB Summit.

The Prime Minister said that India’s efforts are important, as this is a new model of the global war against TB. He elaborated on the multi-pronged approach against TB in the last 9 years. He listed people’s participation, nutrition enhancement, treatment innovation, technological integration and health and prevention interventions like Fit India, Yoga and Khelo India.

On public participation, the Prime Minister spoke about the Ni-Kshay Mitra Abhiyan to help TB patients. He informed that about one million TB patients have been adopted by citizens and children in the age group of 10-12 years have also come forward. Financial assistance to TB patients under the programme has reached Rs one thousand crore. He described this movement as ‘inspiring’ and expressed happiness that Indian tourists are also participating in it.

Noting the major challenge of nutrition for TB patients, the Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of the Ni-Kshay Mitra Abhiyan in helping TB patients. He underlined that the Government had announced the Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme for TB patients in 2018 and as a result, about Rs. 2000 crore has been transferred directly to their bank accounts for their treatment, benefiting more than 75 lakh TB patients. The Prime Minister said, “Ni-Kshay Mitra has now become a new source of energy for all TB patients.” Noting that it is extremely difficult to reach new solutions by adopting old methods, the Prime Minister said that the Government has come up with a new strategy to ensure that TB patients do not give up their treatment. He gave the example of launching the Ayushman Bharat scheme for TB testing and treatment, increasing the number of testing laboratories in the country and formulating area-specific action policies targeting cities with a high number of TB patients. Similarly, the Prime Minister informed that a new campaign called ‘TB Mukt Panchayat Abhiyan’ is also being launched today. He also highlighted that the Government is starting a 3-month treatment program instead of a 6-month course for TB prevention. He informed that earlier patients had to take medicines daily for 6 months, but now in the new system, the patient will have to take medicines only once a week.

The Prime Minister informed about the technological integration in the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. He said that the Ni-Kshaya portal and the use of data science are going a long way in this regard. He said that the Ministry of Health-ICMR has developed a new mechanism for sub-national disease surveillance which makes India the only country to have such a model apart from WHO.

Referring to the declining number of TB patients and today’s award to Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister noted India’s another big resolve to eliminate TB by 2025 against the global target of 2030. Referring to capacity building and health infrastructure during the pandemic, the Prime Minister emphasized on trace, test, track, treat and high use of technology in the fight against the disease. “This local approach of India has great global potential,” he said, stressing the need to collectively harness that potential. 80 per cent of TB drugs are made in India, he said. “I want more and more countries to benefit from all such initiatives, innovations and modern technology of India. The Prime Minister also informed about the steps taken to expand health services in Kashi. The Varanasi branch of the National Centre for Disease Control was inaugurated today. A public health monitoring unit also started functioning. He mentioned the child care institute at BHU, modernization of blood bank, modern trauma centre, super-speciality block and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre where more than 70 thousand patients have been treated. He also mentioned the expansion of Kabir Chaura Hospital, District Hospital, dialysis facilities, CT scan facilities and health services in rural areas of Kashi. More than 1.5 lakh patients have received free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Varanasi and more than 70 Jan Aushadhi Kendras are providing affordable medicines to patients.

Concluding the address, the Prime Minister emphasised that India is engaged in the TB elimination drive by harnessing the country’s experience, expertise and determination. He also said that India is always ready to help any country in need. “Our campaign against TB will succeed only with Sabka Prayas. I believe that our efforts today will strengthen the foundation of our secure future and we will be in a position to hand over a better world to our future generations,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Background

The Prime Minister addressed the One World TB Summit on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day. The summit is being organised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Stop TB Partnership. Established in 2001, the Stop TB Partnership is a United Nations-hosted organisation that amplifies the voices of people, communities and countries affected by TB.

During the event, the Prime Minister launched various initiatives including the TB Free Panchayats initiative; Short TB Preventive Treatment (TPT); Family-Centered Care Model for TB and also released India’s Annual TB Report 2023. The Prime Minister also presented awards to selected States/UTs and districts for progress towards TB elimination.

In March 2018, during the End TB Summit held in New Delhi, the Prime Minister called upon India to achieve the SDG target on TB by 2025, five years ahead of schedule. The World TB Summit will provide an opportunity to further deliberate on the goals as the country moves towards meeting its TB elimination objectives. It will also be an opportunity to learn from national TB elimination programmes. International delegates from over 30 countries will be present at the summit.
