Prime Minister Modi visited different states, but did not visit Manipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also made 14 foreign trips since communal conflict broke out in Manipur on May 3 last year. Between May 2023 and April 2024, he made more than two dozen visits to Rajasthan and also visited Madhya Pradesh 22 times. He has visited Gujarat 24 times. Modi has been participating in rallies in Gujarat but he has not said a word about the violence in Manipur. He is silent on this biggest failure of his and the insult of the country.

Gujarat was established on May 1, 1960. May 3 marks one year since violence broke out in India’s sensitive border state Manipur. During this time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not made a single visit to this violence-hit northeastern state, but on the other hand has made ‘162’ official and non-official visits to other states of the country.

PM Modi also made 14 official visits abroad during this period and these visits took place when Manipur was hit by violence, in which 230 people were killed and more than 60,000 people were rendered homeless. The state is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and despite the violence, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh remains in his post and no action has been taken against him or any other minister.

The opposition has always questioned the PM’s absence in Manipur. When Manipur was in the grip of violence, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the state. Later he also started his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Manipur itself.

Data collected by BBC Hindi from the PMO website shows that between May 2023 and April 2024, PM Modi has made a maximum of two dozen visits to Rajasthan. Along with this, he also visited Madhya Pradesh 22 times. Assembly elections were held in both the states in November last year and PM Modi campaigned vigorously for the BJP there. When violence broke out in Manipur, PM Modi was busy campaigning for the Karnataka assembly elections. According to BBC data, he visited Karnataka eight times in the last one year. During this period, he visited his home state Gujarat 10 times and Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest number of seats in the Lok Sabha, 17 times.

In February-March this year, PM Modi visited the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh but did not visit Manipur. He visited Assam three times and Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh once each.

According to official records, PM Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh on March 9 for the ‘Develop India, Develop North-East’ program.

During the assembly elections held in five states in November last year, PM Modi campaigned vigorously in all the other states, but did not visit Mizoram. Mizoram is a state adjacent to Manipur, where people of the Kuki community displaced by the violence in Manipur had migrated in large numbers.

Apart from domestic visits, PM Modi has also made 14 international visits since May 2023. Meanwhile, he also participated in the inauguration of a Hindu temple in the UAE.
Election boycott
The Kuki community group Young Kuki has decided to boycott the elections in protest against the violence. About 1000 people are associated with this group. The group member is Hetzel Hokip. ‘Young Kuki is not an organization or affiliated to anyone. It is a group of like-minded people, who talk about the feelings and rights of Kuki youth. We are against this election due to the situation in Manipur. How can we accept such an election when the state and central governments do not even recognize our existence? No one cares about our poor condition. We complained a lot and raised our voice, but we are still politically isolated.’ Why vote if we do not see any leadership?
It was difficult to conduct elections in Manipur. The law and order in the state has completely collapsed. This is the failure of the double engine government. The state has been devastated in the last 10 months.

After the violence, more than 65 thousand people have left their homes in Manipur so far. 6 thousand cases have been registered and 144 people have been arrested. 36 thousand security personnel and 40 IPS have been deployed in the state. A total of 129 posts have been established in both hill and valley districts. (Google translation from Gujarati)
