Ahmedabad, July 20, 2024

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation have ordered the sealing of 78 industrial units running without permission in Narol. A PIL is being heard in the Gujarat High Court regarding the pollution of the Sabarmati river.

Chemical water is being released into the municipal sewer line passing through the Narol area of Ahmedabad. Water and drainage connections will also be cut to stop this.

A municipal meeting was held to stop pollution in the Sabarmati river. Commissioner M. Thennarasan has taken this step to stop the flow of sewage into the sewer lines from various industrial units in the south and eastern areas of the city.

In the review meeting, all the sewage treatment plants owned by the Municipal Corporation in the city were asked to check the capacity, inlet and outlet etc. and submit a report.

The Deputy Commissioners have been entrusted with the responsibility to prevent the release of chemically contaminated water. Three additional shifts have been appointed. Duty has been imposed in the south and east zones of the city from 6 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to 6 am from July 19 to August 16.

Hearing on PIL-98-2021 regarding pollution in the Sabarmati river is going on in the Gujarat High Court.

The first hearing was held on 6.08.2021 and till now the matter has been heard 30 times. So far 49 affidavits have been filed in the case. So far 67 orders have been passed.

In the analysis of river water from Vasna to Narol Bridge in Ahmedabad, this river has become the most polluted.

The report of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board states that the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad has become more polluted than before.
The pH level of the water of the Sabarmati river from Vasna to Narol Bridge is 7.69.
The DO level could not be measured. BOD i.e. biological oxygen demand level is 89.60 milligrams per liter instead of 30. DA level should normally be 5 but it could not be measured due to high quantity. Chemical oxygen demand is 386.6 instead of 100.

Fire staff and bouncers will be present at six locations.

Five security bouncers at each location and firefighters working at Maninagar, Jamsapur, Thaltej, Chandkheda and Bhopal fire stations will be on shift duty with their vehicles while dealing with industrial units in the south and east areas.

The 30 MLD plant costs Rs 112 crore

A common sewage treatment plant of 30 million liters per day capacity was constructed at Bahrampura for industrial units around Narol, Danilimda and Bahrampura.

Earlier action was taken against 61 units

Action was taken against 61 industrial units during the calendar years 2022 and 2023 for releasing chemically polluted water into the Sabarmati river. Out of which 32 units were ordered to close along with other orders. While 12 units were given show cause notice. Notice of instruction was given to 16 units and legal notice to one unit. 32 units were locked, out of which 10 completed the necessary compliance and reopened the industries.

The board is being accused of dumping about 25 to 40 acid tankers daily in this CETP instead of the CETP management. It is known that if the directors of the board do not agree with them, they are also being harassed.

The feeling is becoming intense that the police inspector of Narol is also not taking action on the basis of the complaint of the complainant. What is most shocking is that despite releasing water with over 1000 to 1200 COD, officials of Narol Textile Infrastructure and Enviro Management managed to get a lab report of 130 COD from the GPCB.
