Sciatica by air disorders

Sciatica is commonly known as “Ranjhana” and “Gridhusi” in Ayurveda. It is a nerve disease caused by air disorders. The pain is intense.

According to modern theory, the sciatic nerve originates from the five vertebrae at the end of the spinal cord. When pressure is applied to the vertebrae, this nerve becomes stretched, causing pain. When the nerve, which originates in the waist and runs to the heel of one or both feet, becomes compressed, a person is unable to stand or lift their leg properly. Standing, walking, and sitting cause severe pain. This causes a limp and makes walking very difficult. The sciatic nerve divides into several branches, originating in the buttocks and ending at the toes.

Causes of Sciatica
(1) Dietary habits that harm the air, excessive consumption of starchy foods, dry foods, or pulses, constipation, excessive fasting or sitting alone, excessive walking, excessive worry, grief, and other mental factors can all cause sciatica.

Sciatica is of two types: (1) Related to pure air (2) Related to phlegm or ama dosha (a condition called ama dosha).

Symptoms of Sciatica
In this disease, the patient walks with small steps like a vulture. The nerves in the leg become constricted and stretched, reducing their natural ability to contract and expand. Severe pain and tingling occur along the nerves, as well as in the muscles and tendons. Sometimes, the pain becomes so severe that the patient cannot sleep, and sometimes the pain even causes fever. If the underlying cause of a sprain in one leg is not treated promptly, the pain can spread to both legs. This pain is especially aggravated when walking at night and during rainy and cold weather. Additionally, the pain increases when the patient is exposed to extreme cold or frost, or when the patient gets wet in the rain or swims in water. When the sprain becomes severe, the patient experiences symptoms such as numbness in the legs, loss of touch, stiffness, tingling, dislocation of the leg, and withering of the leg muscles.

If the underlying cause of the sprain is not treated promptly, severe pain can be accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, nausea, chest pain, headache, restlessness, and inability to walk.

Sciatica Treatment
If the Vata Dosha is predominant in sciatica, the patient should undergo Sneha Virechan (purification of the air) and Vamana (vomiting).

If the Ama Dosha or Kapha Dosha is predominant, Vamana should be performed. Basti, considered the best for Vata diseases, has no effect unless the upper body is purified.

If the patient is free from Ama Dosha and his gastric fire is well ignited, he should be given oil basti. Treatment should be done with internal and external medicines.
Among internal medicines, it is beneficial to take any one of Dashmool Kavath, Maharasnadi Kavath, Rasna Panchak etc. after consulting a doctor.

Crush 2 tablets of Mahayogaraj Guggulu and take it with water.
In case of sciatica, Trayodashang Guggulu, Rasnadi Guggulu, Ekangveer Ras, Brihat Vatachintamani Ras etc. should be taken after consulting a specialist doctor.

This powder also gives good results for joint pain, back pain, and knee pain. For sciatica, massage should be done with one of the following: Panchguna oil, Nirgundi oil, Mahanarayan oil, Vishgarbha oil, Prasarni oil, Balatil, etc.

Wheat, rice, milk, ghee, mustard, sesame oil, castor oil, pointed gourd, tandaljani vegetables, rice, fenugreek vegetables, honey, asafoetida, mustard, parsley, sargava, eggplant, pomegranate, and warm water with ginger are beneficial. Additionally,

(3) Apply warm water to the painful leg.

(4) Apply warm nagod leaves to the affected area or massage with nagod oil. (5) Cover yourself with a warm blanket during cold weather.
