On June 2, 2025, Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that Tesla will not make cars in India for the time being. The company has no interest in manufacturing in India, it will open two showrooms in India, of which space has been allotted for the showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex. The company will import cars directly from the US instead of making them in India. The Modi government has not brought Tesla to India, but it has reduced the import duty from 70% to 15%, giving foreign companies a tax benefit of Rs 8,000 per year.

Earlier, the BJP had loudly said that Tesla would come to India.

Gujarat’s EX Vijay Rupani government spokesperson Minister Nitin Patel had announced that the Tesla company would come to Gujarat. After that two governments came. Government spokesperson Rishikesh Patel made this announcement on December 28, 2023.

Before the 2022 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it was rumored that Tesla India could set up a plant in Gujarat in April.

The news of Tesla coming to Gujarat was deliberately given to journalists to print it repeatedly.

The Gujarat government was giving such news repeatedly before the 2022 Gujarat assembly elections. Which influenced the young voters.

Tesla had announced an investment of US$2 billion in India.

Earlier, the lie was spread that Elon Musk would be present at the Gujarat Vibrant Summit 2024. Elon Musk was invited to the Vibrant Summit 2024 in January. Which was only to spread confusion. Such things were leaked that important announcements related to Tesla could be made at the Vibrant Summit.

Elon Musk was not present at the Gujarat Summit. At that time, Tesla India was taking advantage of its political image by spreading the news of setting up a plant in Gujarat. Journalists were printing that news while giving economic reports.

Modi and Tesla

On X, he said, “There should be Tesla electric cars in India too, just like there are electric cars in every country. “Making Tesla electric vehicles available in India is a natural progression.” The reason why Tesla CEO Musk postponed his visit to India was not given at that time. But now it is clear that Elon no longer wants to do business in India. The production of Tesla unit is declining. The government official leading the China Council met Ren Hongbin. The Prime Minister went to Musk to meet him face-to-face in India. When PM Modi visited the US in June 2023, he met Musk. He told the PM at that time that he wanted to enter the Indian market. Which is not appropriate for the head of the country. Chinese auto giant BYD overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the last three months of 2023. During December 2023, Gadkari had said at IIM Nagpur that the company could open a factory in India. He said, we welcome Tesla. But manufacturing in China and selling in India, it is not possible. We will not accept their demand. Ready for manufacturing here.
