In an important decision for social equanimity, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today announced that the benefits of 10 per cent quota for Unreserved Categories of Economically Weaker Class for education to higher education and government jobs will be applicable after Makar Sankranti on January 14, 2019.
In case the announcements have already been made before this date, it is clarified the
eligibility of the new quota will be applicable only for which the announcement has been
made but the process has not yet begun. In such cases, the ongoing process will be
suspended for the time being and fresh process will begin after incorporating the 10 per
cent additional quota.
It is pertinent to mention here that the benefits of the fresh quota will not be applicable for
which the process had begun before January 14, 2019, like for which the process of written, oral, computer proficiency or preliminary tests have already been conducted.
This 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker class from the general category will be
over and above the existing 49 per cent quota for SC/ST/SEBC.
The Gujarat Chief Minister is the first to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Government’s historic and unprecedented revolutionary decision to implement this 10 per
cent reservation.
The Centre had taken this decision under Article 46 of Guiding Principles of Constitution of
India after Amendment of the Articles 15 and 16, incorporating 10 per cent reservation for
Economically Weaker Sections. It extends Constitutional powers to the States to implement
fresh reservation.
