13 thousand nurses, 1500 ambulances in Gujarat

There are 13 thousand 507 nurses working in government hospitals in the state. There are 1920 seats for nurses in 61 government institutions. There are 997 colleges in private institutions and 47 thousand 170 colleges conducting nursing courses. In 2024-25, 500 seats and five new colleges were approved for BSc Nursing in the state. Work is going on to build new colleges in Morbi, Godhra, Porbandar, Rajpipla and Navsari in Gujarat. There are a total of 800 ALS/BLS ambulances and 38 ICU on Wheels on Road under 108 ambulance service in the state. This year, there will be 957 ambulances with 119 new ambulances. With the help of 542 ambulances, now 1499 ambulances are working in emergency situations. In the last two years, medical services have been provided to 28,69,115 people through 108 service in the state. Now with 542 ambulances in the state, 1499 ambulances will prove to be effective in reinforcing medical emergencies. The current daily workload of inter-facility transfer of emergency cases is 350 to 400 cases. Currently, the response time in rural areas is 21.04 minutes and in urban areas 11.26 minutes. With 542 ambulances, the target is to reduce the current average response time of 16.5 minutes in the state of Gujarat to an average response time of 10.00 minutes. Integration through Smart Referral System (SRS) will enable proper tracking of transport/inter-transport of all critical patients and ensure efficient system to reach the right patient to the right hospital at the right time. The hospital had the services of 542 ambulances which will be put into service through 108, thereby ensuring optimal use of vehicle resources, making ambulances easily available to people for general/critical emergencies as well as for referring patients from one hospital to another.

A uniform system with uniform medicines, consumables, trained personnel and medical equipment as per uniform SOP protocol for pre-hospital care in 542 ambulances will ensure continuous and high quality care during inter-facility transfer of critical patients from hospital to hospital as well as during transportation from the incident site.

The availability of ambulances for emergency services in remote and inaccessible areas will increase and people in rural areas will have quick access to ambulances.

Real-time data and combined, integrated comprehensive performance analysis will help in decision making for future resource allocation and system improvement. And efficiency will improve as all ambulances are equipped with GPS tracking devices to monitor real-time location movement.

Currently the 108 system is centrally controlled and is linked to the CM dashboard, so that it can be implemented more effectively and efficiently at the state level in events like disaster or epidemic.

From now onwards all kinds of information about the type of patients referred to the ambulance services used for the treatment of patients in the state will be available from a single institution 108 EMRI GHS.

The state government has also planned an annual budget of Rs 104.77 crore to operate this system under 108 service with a total of 542 ambulances along with the existing 108 emergency service protocol, training, manpower and operational management system in the state.
