On May 7, 1861, a child was born in a Bengali family in Kolkata, who was named Rabindra. Who later earned the name of a world famous writer, poet and great personality. We are talking about the great Rabindranath Tagore. According to the Gregorian calendar, Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861. However, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated according to the Bengali calendar and it falls on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Vaishakh. In the year 2025, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is being celebrated on Friday, May 9. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated to celebrate the great literary works of Rabindranath Tagore.
Rabindranath Tagore is also known as ‘Gurudev’. Mahatma Gandhi gave him the title of ‘Gurudev’. Not only this, Gandhiji was first called Mahatma by Rabindranath Tagore, after which Mahatma was added to Gandhiji’s name.
Talking about the closeness of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Gujarat, Rabindranath Tagore spent a long time in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Rabindranath Tagore wrote many compositions while staying in the ‘Shahi Mahal’ located in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, which is currently known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial. When Gurudev’s elder brother Satyendranath Tagore was in the ICS, he was posted in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Rabindranath Tagore also used to come to Gujarat many times and spend a long time there. While living in Ahmedabad, he composed his two popular Bengali poems ‘Bandi O Amar’ and ‘Nirob Rajni Dekho’. He also wrote a part of his famous composition ‘Kshudit Paashan’ during his visit to Gujarat and not only this, a daughter from Gujarat, Mrs. Hathisingh came to Gurudev’s house as his daughter-in-law. When Satyendranath Tagore’s wife Gyanandini Deviji lived in Ahmedabad, she saw that the local women keep their sari palav on their right shoulder. Seeing this, Gyanandini Devi thought why not tie the sari palav on the left side. Since then it is said that the idea of keeping the sari palav on the left shoulder is her contribution. India’s national anthem ‘Jana-Gana-Mana’ is the gift of Rabindranath Tagore. He is considered one of the most influential and critically acclaimed writers, poets and novelists. Some of his notable works include Gitanjali, Postmaster, Kabuliwala and Nastanirha. His notable works also include short stories, essays and songs, which have inspired many other famous works. These short stories and songs are known as ‘Rabindra Sangeet’. Which is considered a famous literature in the world of music. Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize for the poem Gitanjali in 1913. The works written by Rabindranath Tagore are still famous all over the world and his name is counted among the greatest poets and writers of the world. He died on 7 August 1941 in Kolkata at the age of 80. Rabindranath Tagore was not only a writer or poet but also a passionate social reformer. He did many great works in social life. Rabindranath Tagore was not a person, but an institution. His life and work symbolize humanity, creativity and freedom. His works and thoughts inspire today’s youth not only to live life but also to make it beautiful and meaningful.
