360 MW electricity not produced in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad
After a delay of 8 years, Jindal Urban Waste Management has started the work of generating electricity from waste in Ahmedabad. During the trial run, 15 MW electricity is being generated through a 15 MW per hour turbine. One thousand tons of solid waste per day will generate 360 MW electricity which will be supplied to the power grid.
In 2016, the Khadi Committee approved the establishment of a plant to generate electricity from waste collected from more than 21 lakh residential and commercial properties in Ahmedabad. 14 acres of expensive land was allotted on 19.08.2016. The project was actually supposed to be operational in 2018.
The tenure of Jindal Urban Waste Management Limited was continuously extended by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
The annual cost of the government’s failed door-to-door garbage collection increased to Rs. 240 crores. 3500 metric tons of garbage is dumped here every day. In 2030, Ahmedabad will generate 5000 metric tons of garbage. In 2016, the BJP government of the state announced the waste to energy policy and planned to generate electricity by processing the garbage instead of dumping it. So far, not a single power plant is working in any city of Gujarat. Out of 6.50 crore people of Gujarat, where 2 crore people live, it produces the most garbage. 10 thousand tons of garbage is generated every day in 8 municipalities and 162 municipalities of Gujarat state. Out of which only 20 percent is processed. Even after recycling the garbage, 35 lakh tons of garbage is dumped across the state every year.
Whose interest
Jindal Urban Waste Management Limited is kind to the BJP leaders at the top. Whose interest is protected in this? No company in the country has been able to do this work effectively. Instead of blacklisting the company that did not perform well, its term was extended. The land had to be taken back. A fresh global tender had to be issued.
Power generation
It was finally extended to November 2024. Solid waste is burnt in boilers using incineration technology to generate 65 THP steam. 15 MW of electricity was to be generated by steam through turbines of 15 MW capacity.
High payment
The agency is paid Rs 6.31 per kWh by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited. The municipal corporation is paid Rs 0.76 per kWh as viability gap fund.
Violation of rules in Abalone Clean Energy
Earlier also, the BJP government of Ahmedabad had broken the agreement by extending the deadline for Abalone Clean Energy Limited to start the waste to energy project. The state government has extended the deadline of the work given to the Abalone company under the waste to energy project till March 31, 2025.
