Ahmedabad, December 4, 2025
In June 2025, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel allocated ₹1700 crore to 8 municipal corporations and 5 municipalities to fill potholes and repair damaged roads before the monsoon season began.
Due to the criminal negligence of the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Corporation’s Engineering Department, an average of ₹300 to ₹400 crore is spent annually on road works. Previously, it cost ₹1 crore per kilometer, but now it costs ₹2 crore for repairs. One wishes that the entire road could be built with that much money. The Engineering Department has been awarding contracts to its favored contractors by issuing single tenders for routine works.
Out of the ₹25,000 crore allocated to the Road and Building Department, Ahmedabad Metropolitan Corporation received ₹1.50 lakh. ₹546 crore was given to Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, ₹32 crore to Anand, ₹148 crore to Morbi, ₹270 crore to Surendranagar, ₹257 crore to Nadiad, ₹72 crore to Navsari, and ₹91 crore to Vapi. This money is being used to repair roads damaged during the monsoon.
After the monsoon, a situation arose where 200 roads in Ahmedabad had to be repaired and strengthened by filling potholes. So far, work on 32 roads has been completed. For this, 7,000 metric tons of asphalt are being laid daily from 13 asphalt hot mix plants. 230 roads were damaged.
On December 3, 2025, the Municipal Commissioner held a meeting with engineers from all zones and the Road Project Department and instructed them to expedite the completion of work on the remaining roads in different parts of the city.
Ahmedabad has become a city of dust and potholes. Accidents are occurring due to the bad roads. People are dying in these accidents. Complaints of back pain have increased. Reports indicate that 2,000 potholes or gaps have appeared in the city after the monsoon season ended.
In 2024, in addition to grants from the Urban Development Department, each MLA received an extra grant of ₹2 crore in a special case from the Road and Housing Department. The Road and Housing Department provided ₹86 crore to 43 MLAs in the municipal corporation area, of which not all was utilized in Ahmedabad.

2017: The Year of Corruption
In 2017, a ₹450 crore road scam took place. This scam shook the entire state of Gujarat. The slogan “Development has gone mad” resonated with the people and the BJP secured 99 seats in the assembly elections.
Road App
In 2025, the Road and Housing Department launched the Gujmarg mobile phone app, which was downloaded by 10,000 people. Citizens registered 3632 complaints, all of which were resolved.
The Gujarat Assembly convenes for only 40 days, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s General Board meeting is held only 12 times a year. Therefore, discussions and resolutions regarding citizens’ amenities and problems are often neglected.
