Open Heart Surgery saves life of two month infant with Congenital Heart Disease
Shree Krishna Hosptial , Karamsad saved two month old child with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD.) The complex open heart surgery was performed by the Cardiac team of SKH at the Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre . Only two centres in the Gujarat have the expertise and facility to perform such complex pediatric cardiac surgeries .
Aahil Ramju Sumara from Mundra village of Kutch District belonging to the weaker sections of the society had difficulty in breathing and excessive sweating. He cried continuously . The parents consulted a pediatric doctor of the region . In the primary examination the doctor found signs of Congenial Heart Disease as a result of which the child was not getting enough oxygen . The child was referred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
Later the Sarpanch of the village approached the Cardiac Centre of the SKH and child was brought to the hospital. The team of the cardiac centre evaluated the child. Dr. Bhadra Trivedi, pediatric cardiologist provided pre operative care to stabilize the child as a significant proportion of infant mortality attributed to CHD is due to numerous shortcomings in the care .
Dr. Vishal Bhende, Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon performed the open heart surgery. According to Dr. Vishal Bhende, the child had a defect in veins leading from the lungs to the
heart. Therefore the blood did not take the normal route from the lungs to the heart and out to the body. The veins from the lungs attach to the heart in abnormal positions and due to this condition oxygenated blood enters or leaks into the wrong chamber. Severe obstruction of the pulmonary veins tends to make the infant breathe harder .This defect must be surgically repaired in early infancy . At the time of the open-heart surgery, the pulmonary veins are reconnected to the left atrium and the atrial septal defect is closed.

Dr. Bhadra Trivedi said the child `s parents were unable to pay the cost of the treatment. The operation was performed under the Mukhyamantri Amrutum Yojana.. The post operative treatment cost borne by the hospital . It is a complex heart surgery and with the cardiac team efforts the child is now normal .The total cost of surgical procedures in the hospital varies from Rs 3.5 to 4.5 lakh .

According Aahil`s uncle Shakur Sumara a leader of the village, “we are very happy with the services of the hospital and through mouth publicity we will referred more patients from our region. He also admired the services provided to patient 39;s relatives for stay”.
