Gandhinagar, 9 March 2021
The Gujarat Agriculture Department had estimated wheat planting 12.74 lakh hectares in 2020-21. Against this, farmers planted more than 1.08 lakh hectares and planted a total of 13.66 lakh hectares. Which is 9 percent more than the style of the government.
The Department of Agriculture had estimated to produce 40.47 lakh tonnes in 12.74 lakh hectares in the year 2020-21. 3178 kg per hectare. After a good monsoon, good production is expected. According to this, the production is expected to be 48 lakh tonnes at 13.66 lakh hectares at 3500 kg per hectare.
In 2020-21, planting has been done on 13.66 lakh hectares. It is less than 13.95 lakh hectares in 2019-20. However, it was 11 lakh hectares on average in the last three years. This record is the third consecutive year of planting.
The Gujarat government will start procuring wheat a week later from March 16, 2021 and will complete it by July 31, 2021. Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation will fix the support price of Rs 1975 per quintal at 235 godown centers. Purchased at 1940 prices in the previous agricultural year 2019-20.
The government has set down prices. But the farmers say that if their profit and land rent are taken into consideration, then they can take only Rs 2400 instead of 1975. The government should buy at a price of Rs 2400-2500.
If Gujarat produces 48 lakh tonnes of wheat and it is calculated at Rs 25,000 per tonne, then wheat worth Rs 12,000 crore will be produced. If 40 lakh tonnes of wheat is produced, wheat worth Rs 10,000 crore will be produced.
The central government is expected to procure 40 million tonnes of wheat from 43 lakh farmers in the country. But the Gujarat government has not announced how many purchases will be made from Gujarat. However, out of 48 lakh tonnes of wheat produced, barely 2 lakh tonnes can be procured. This means that 5 percent will be difficult to buy. It is expected to procure barely Rs 500 crore out of Rs 12,000 crore of wheat. Due to which the farmers have to bear heavy losses. Purchased 8 percent of total groundnut production. Food Corporation of India makes the largest procurement of wheat from Punjab and Haryana.
Wheat was first procured in Gujarat in 1966 at a support price. After that, production is continuously increasing.
If the government buys wheat for Rs 2,000, then it costs the government Rs 2,680. 33 per cent of the cost goes to the government for procurement. Which the government gives to the poor from cheap grain shops.
