Ahmedabad’s Air Polluted by Dust
Ahmedabad, September 17, 2025
Projects worth ₹91 crore have been approved to address air pollution in Ahmedabad.
Road dust accounts for 36%, domestic use 34%, STP plants and industries, and construction activities 16% are the main causes of air pollution. Furthermore, vehicles emit nitrogen oxides into the air, and industries and crematoriums emit harmful and hazardous gases like sulfur dioxide, which are a very serious issue. ₹280 crore has been spent on air pollution mitigation over the four years leading up to 2023.
The air quality index is increasing day by day. Ahmedabad city currently does not rank among the top 50 cities in the country on the air quality index.
People are demanding immediate action on a war footing to ensure clean air for the people of Ahmedabad.
The expenditure will be made to improve the city’s air quality under the National Clean Air Programme. ICLI South Asia has been appointed as a consultant to mitigate air pollution. An action plan will be developed based on information received from the Centralized Air Monitoring Center.
The AMC is initiating work on road improvements, dust control, electric bus charging facilities, and scientific monitoring. Road resurfacing and dust control infrastructure will be developed. Re-carpeting, road cleaning, water sprinkling, and roadside dust collection will be carried out.
This will cost ₹41 crore. Additionally, ₹123 million will be spent on EV charging stations at AMTS bus depots, and ₹18 crore has been allocated for air quality improvement at the local level – air quality monitoring and control work in the municipalities of Gandhinagar, Kalol, Sanand, and Bavla.
Municipal officials are using a significant amount of the BJP air pollution mitigation grants to benefit contractors. The lack of paved roads, construction sites, and regular cleaning in the city has led to increased dust levels in the air.
Ahmedabad’s air is becoming toxic. Air pollution has increased abnormally in the Raikhad and Rakhiyal areas of the city. The central government has provided grants worth crores of rupees to improve the air quality index. However, municipal officials have not utilized this money properly.
BJP officials spend crores of rupees in the name of cleaning the air. Despite this expenditure, the people of Ahmedabad city do not get clean air. The BJP, which is in power in the municipal corporation, uses a large portion of the grants meant for air pollution reduction to benefit its favored contractors.
Furthermore, the lack of paved roads in the city, construction sites, and regular cleaning has significantly increased the amount of dust in the air. Therefore, funds allocated for improving the air quality index and
reducing air pollution in the city are being used for other purposes.
Concrete actions should be taken to identify the sources of air pollution, find solutions to reduce air pollution, regularly monitor whether air pollution has decreased, and remove garbage dumps in Pirana.
