Gandhinagar, 8 February 2024
Most cities of Gujarat get flooded during monsoon. People are worried. 250 small and 15 metropolitan cities of Gujarat have been filled with rain water. The road breaks down. People’s houses get filled with water. Mercury harms business. Then now tough decisions are being taken to create a sponge city to grab public money. Most cities are located on the banks of a river or sea. Its roads are not cleaned and public money will be wasted by planning to build a sponge city.
Vadodara Municipal Corporation is planning to build a sponge city in the budget 2024-24.
A plan has been shown to build a sponge ward or sponge city in Bhayali of Vadodara city.
The meaning of Sponge City is in its name itself. Sponges or foam work in a similar way. A sponge absorbs surrounding water and is also used to clean something.
Sponge cities are a way to reduce the intensity of floods. Flood and rain water is properly disposed of. Its purpose is to raise the groundwater level or to reuse that water.
Rainwater and stormwater are collected in one place, and the water is released into the ground. However, all the technical work has to be done for this. Bores are made to recharge water up to 100 feet in the ground. Due to which water goes underground. Some time ago the idea of developing Sponge City in Chennai was mooted. There is no sponge city anywhere in Gujarat. 3 crore people live in cities.
In 8 cities of Gujarat, property worth crores of rupees was constructed to drain the monsoon water underground through bores. She is out of work. Such vines were created in 258 gardens of Ahmedabad. There are 2700 gardens in 15 major cities of Gujarat which have water recharge schemes. Since it is no longer in use, plans are now being made to build a sponge city here.
Sponge City’s infrastructure cannot withstand more than 200 millimeters (7.9 in) of rainfall per day. Many cities of Gujarat get submerged in 10 inches of rain. Due to heavy rains in many cities of Gujarat, flood like situations have arisen. Thousands of houses collapse. In such a situation, questions are being raised on the anti-flood sponge city model. Cities with higher populations are more prone to floods or droughts.
The sponge city model was developed to deal with natural disasters such as floods and droughts in China’s major cities. Due to construction the water absorption capacity of soil reduces. Trees are cut down and the land is covered with concrete. Due to which water does not go inside the ground. In such a situation, the risk of flood increases when it rains. Sponge City was created to solve this problem. A city that can absorb water.
A total of 30 cities were selected for the pilot project in China in 2015 and 2016. Trees were planted there, canals and ponds were built. So that the excess water goes out of the city. This will reduce the risk of both floods and drought. But the situation has reversed.
