From 2000 to 2020, there was a change of 35.7 thousand hectares (9.5%) in tree cover in Gujarat. In which the forest in Gujarat was 370 thousand hectares. There was an increase of 41.7 thousand hectares. While the loss in forests was 6.03 thousand hectares. Against this was a troubled 372-hectare Janggo.
From 2001 to 2021, 101 hectares of tree cover was lost in Gujarat, which is equivalent to a 0.57% reduction in tree cover and 46.1 kt of CO₂e emissions since 2000.

In Gujarat, the top 2 regions were responsible for 52% of all tree loss between 2001 and 2021. In Narmada, maximum 27 hectares of trees have been damaged as compared to an average of 5 hectares.

According to Global Forest Watch, from the year 2001 to 2020, the people of the state of Gujarat have lost trees in an area of 101 hectares. Forests have been cut. Most of the trees have been lost by the people of Narmada and Dang districts. In which 9 hectares of trees were burnt to ashes in the forest. Deforestation resulted in the felling of 92 hectares of trees.

In 7 days from 23 May 2023 to 30 May 2023, there were 489 fire incidents in Gujarat. From June 1, 2020 to May 20, 2023, there were 16 thousand 968 incidents of forest fire. In the year 2022, there was an incident of fire in 8 thousand hectares of forest land. While in 2021, 76 thousand hectares of forests were on fire.
Jamnagar, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, Morbi have reported the maximum number of fire incidents in Gujarat in the last 4 weeks.
As of 2000, Gujarat had 17.9 thousand hectares of forests while 12 thousand hectares of non-forest trees.
In Gujarat, as of 2010, 2 districts accounted for 57% of Gujarat’s total tree cover. Dang had the highest tree cover of 2.27 hectares. The district average in the state is 213 hectares.

The government should also take concrete steps in this direction and investigate the cause of the fire.
