The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has given a big relief to mobile users. The charge of 50 paise on SMS sent after 100 SMS has also been abolished, now more than 100 SMS can be sent daily. TRAI has announced the draft Telecommunication Tariff Order 2020 regarding the tariff rule for SMS.
TRAI believes that there is no need to charge 50 paise after the daily limit of 100 SMS, as there is now enough technology to check spam SMS. It proposed to withdraw the rules applicable to SMS in the year 2012. For this, TRAI had sought written comments from stakeholders by March 3 and counter comments by March 17.
Since then, TRAI has taken this decision. So far, telecom operators have been charging at least 50 paise per day beyond the limit of 100 SMS per day. This rule came into force in the year 2020. TRAI had set a limit of 100 SMS per day to protect telecom subscribers from UCC.
