Surat is called the ‘Organ Donor City’ of Gujarat.
During the corona pandemic, Surat has carved out a niche in organ donation not only in Gujarat but across the country. In Gujarat, 180 people donated organs between January and December 2017. Half of which i.e. 91 organ donations took place in Surat. According to ‘Donate Life’, 28 people from Ahmedabad have donated their organs. 26 people from Bhavnagar donated organs In 2017 out of 106 kidney donations, 52 were from Surat. Bhavnagar is second with 17 kidney donations and Ahmedabad with 15 is at the third position. In 2017, 28 out of 62 liver donations were done in Surat. A total of 10 people from Gujarat donated hearts and out of these 9 were from Surat.

There are 17 Kidney Transplant Centers and 5 Liver Transplant Centers in Gujarat.
The government inaugurated the heart and lung transplant program at UN Mehta Hospital. But it hasn’t started yet. Ahmedabad is the only registered private hospital for heart transplant.
