Farmer Govind Patel in Nakhatrana of Kutch has brought great benefits to the farmers by adopting a new method in the cultivation of Bijora. Bijora is a fruit that cannot be used directly. Therefore, it is not so popular among the people. But in Kutch, there is a wild variety of beans which is used traditionally by the people of Kutch.
In Kutch, pickles were traditionally made from chickpeas. But this farmer’s son has strengthened agriculture by organizing the farmers, getting them to cultivate, and making many things, increasing its consumption. A group of 20 farmers was formed and they were encouraged to cultivate Bijora. Therefore, today it is being cultivated in 100 bighas. This has been possible due to Govindbhai.
Bijora trees are found scattered in many houses or farms in India. But it was not cultivated anywhere in India. So cultivation has started in Kutch. Gauingbhai buys all the material from these farmers at a price 20 percent higher than the market price. He processes it.
The farmers of Kutch have allowed Bijora to remain a wild variety. It has not been converted into a hybrid. Therefore, its medicinal value is the highest. It can be grafted and mixed with lemon. But the farmers of Kutch have not done this. The farmer does not want to develop its hybrid variety. He wants to keep it real. Because only then it can be maintained as a medicine.
Bijora has been used for this purpose for generations in Kutch. Now they are converting it into commercial value and sending it out of Gujarat. They make beverages for the people of Pathri and sell them by filling them in bottles. There is a good demand for it.
