Corona Virus – The state government has lifted the earlier ban on fishermen from going to sea in the wake of the lock-down announced due to the epidemic of Covid-19. Government also begun to issue tokens to fishermen.
They will be able to catch Fish, shrimp, processing & packaging, cold chain maintenance and transportation.
Production and export of fish is reduced.
As per report of ‘Marine Products Export Development Authority’ 3,12,568 tonnes of marine products were exported in 2017-18, it was reduced to 3,05,326 tonnes in 2018-19.
During the year 2017-18, $ 843 million worth of marine products was exported from the state. While export figures have dropped to $ 798 million in the year 2018-19.
What happened to the law
The law of Gujarat’s fishermen are only one to do fishing activity at the coast of Gujarat is not followed by everyone. There is a law that fishermen of Gujarat cannot fish in the ocean of Maharashtra. But fishermen not from Gujarat are fishing in the Gulf.
Fishermen from another state caught fishing in Gujarat will fine of up to one lakh rupees. A penalty of 5 times the value of the fish caught will be charged.
