Ahmedabad, 2 August 2024
The central government will conduct the 21st livestock census across the country from September to December 2024. A 5-year plan will be made based on that data. In 2019, 3 lakh 40 thousand cows decreased. The question is, is the breed of cow decreasing this time?
For the first time, stray animals have been included in the census.
Livestock census has been conducted every 5 years since 1919.
India is the only country in the world that has counted cattle for 100 consecutive years. Which includes all domestic animals.
This time the cattle of nomadic shepherds, stray cattle, dogs and cattle in cages, cow shelters, government farms and dairy farms will be counted.
219 types and breeds of animals will be counted in the country. 1 lakh officers and employees of the country will conduct the census.
28 species of animals of Gujarat will be counted. Which includes Gir, Kankerge, Dagri, Dangi and Nari breeds in cow breeds, Mehsani, Jafarabadi, Banni and Surati breeds in buffalo breeds.
To get the details of animals in Gujarat, 2700 enumerators will work in villages and 1700 in cities. There will be 670 supervisors.
Use of mobile app
Mobile application and software will be used for the first time in the country. Pilot projects have been started in Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
Mobile apps and software are running in Jodiya and Kalavad taluka of Jamnagar district.
The 20th animal census was conducted online by feeding the data into the tablet.
Going door to door, details of village, house, animal and its owner will be filled in the application from mobile.
Information about agricultural land, agricultural equipment, stray animals including cow, dog will be transferred to mobile.
The enumerators will send their supervisor from the Veterinary Officer Mobile to the District Nodal Officer.
The District Nodal Officer and State Nodal Officer can be sent to the Government of India using web application and dashboard. The District Nodal Officer will be monitored from the dashboard. The Government of India will declare the livestock population.
For the census, the nodal officers of animal husbandry of Gujarat were trained on mobile app, web app and dashboard.
In the census of the year 2019, there were 2 crore 68 lakh cattle in Gujarat. 96 lakh cows were registered. In which there were 17 lakh 50 thousand Gir cows. There were 17 lakh 70 thousand Kankrej cows. There were 63 thousand Dangi cows. There were 33 lakh 80 thousand hybrid cows. 26 lakh 50 thousand other cows were registered.
There were a total of 1 crore 5 lakh buffaloes, of which 39 lakh 50 thousand Mehsani buffaloes, 14 lakh 70 thousand Jaffrabadi buffaloes, 11 lakh 40 thousand Surati buffaloes, 7 lakh 70 thousand Banni buffaloes and 31 lakh 80 thousand other buffaloes were registered.
17 lakh 80 thousand sheep and 48 lakh 60 goats were registered.
What are the conditions?
The BJP government with its Hindu ideology is running a big campaign for cows. But the situation on earth is somewhat different.
The cow population including Desi and Shankar was 1 crore in 2012 and increased to 96 lakh 43 thousand in 2019. In which there were 20 lakh bulls and 67 lakh 66 thousand cows. According to the natural birth rate, more calves are born and less female calves. Thus, comparatively 47 lakh bulls were less or missing.
Cattle decreased and milk increased
Milk production was 9.81 crore kilograms in 2012, which increased to 14.50 crore liters in 2019. If cows decrease, how will milk production increase? The number of disguised cows has also not increased that much.
Desi cows have decreased
Secondly, the number of desi cows was 50 lakh 32 thousand in 2012, which has decreased to 43 lakh 77 thousand in 2019 in 7 years. 6 lakh 55 thousand cows have decreased. Every year 1 lakh desi cows are decreasing. According to that, the number of desi cows can increase to 40 lakh in 2024.
Desi bulls are missing
The calf birth rate is high in cows that give birth to calves. According to that, there should be more than 40 lakh desi bulls or oxen today. But in 2019 it remained only 18 lakh 50 thousand. Which was 30 lakh 25 thousand in 2012. In 2023 there will be barely 16 lakh bulls, thus in 7 years there will be 50 percent less bulls. Who have either been fed alcohol or have been killed.
Thus compared to cows, there are only 16 lakh bulls out of 40 lakh. The remaining 24 lakh bulls are missing. Where have they gone? The government is not giving any answer.
cross breed cows
Compared to native cows, Shankar or cross breed cows were 17 lakh 34 thousand in 2012, which increased to 32 lakh 70 thousand in 2019. The number of bulls of Shankar cow has decreased from 1 lakh 92 thousand to 1 lakh 36 thousand.
