The Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar Metro train service has been extended from Motera station to the Secretariat in Gandhinagar on 27 April 2025. Along with this, seven new modern stations have also been added to make travel more convenient on this route. It has been 21 years since the BJP government started the metro project in 2003, but the project is still not completed. The cost has increased from Rs. 3 thousand crores to Rs. It has increased from 15 thousand to 20 thousand crores.
From now on, the metro train will depart from Motera and connect new stations like Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Sector-10 and finally reach the Secretariat in Gandhinagar.
This will provide direct and fast connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The extension of metro service to the Secretariat and adding new stations is a welcome step towards smooth transportation. Now more people will be able to take advantage of the metro service and get relief from traffic problems.
The metro rail project running between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad could not be completed in 17 years due to many obstacles. When life resumed in Gujarat after the havoc of Corona, the Ahmedabad Metro train also started running. Earlier, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani reviewed the progress of the first phase of the metro train. In the last 17 years, out of the total 39.25 km of Phase-1 of this metro train, only 6.5 km of work has been completed, while the project cost of the metro is Rs 15.54 crore. It has increased from Rs 3500 crore to Rs 12787 crore.
The Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project was considered in 2003 and since then 17 years have passed. Even after the start of work on the Metro Rail project, there has been an unforgivable delay of four years. When the Metro Rail project was planned in 2003, the project cost was fixed at Rs 3500 crore. The cost of the metro running between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad has been estimated at Rs 6700 crore, but if there is a delay in this too, the cost will increase to Rs 1000 crore. Its amount is likely to be Rs 10 thousand crore.
It was targeted to be completed in 2018.
When the metro rail project was conceived in 2003, the cost of the project was fixed at Rs 3500 crore. The second time we considered it in 2007, the cost of the project was going to be Rs 8000 crore.
Due to delay, the cost of the project has increased to 12787 crores. In 2014, the cost of the metro rail project had reached 10773 crores, but due to delay, now the cost of the project has increased to 12787 crores. The more delay there is in this project, the more the cost will increase. Now the company has set a target to complete the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project in 2022. It is targeted to be completed in 2023, although the estimated cost of Rs 6,700 crore is likely to increase to over Rs 10,000 crore.
The total length of the metro route in Gandhinagar was 34 km, but according to the revised DPR, the length of the metro route has been reduced to 28 km. This work has been completed so far. It will have two corridors – the first, 22.84 km long, will connect Motera to Mahatma Mandir and the second, a 5.42 km long branch from Gujarat National Law University, will connect PDPU and GIFT City. The Center has approved the second phase, but work could not start due to Corona.
