Meenaben of Ghatlodia, Ahmedabad, was declared brain dead. His 3 daughters decided to donate organs. His organ donation has saved the lives of 3 patients. Has done inspiring work for the whole society.
Minaben has three daughters and two sons in his family. On January 19, 2021, 48-year-old Meenaben of Chanakyapuri Ghatlodia, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was declared dead brain. The doctors apple Meenaben’s family to donate the organs.
The lives of 3 people were saved by transplanting organs in the newly constructed Trauma Center of Ahmedabad Civil hospital. The liver of Minaben has been implanted to a 15-year-old child in Jamnagar district and both kidneys have been given to a 30-year-old man and a 35-year-old man from Surendranagar. A total of three patients have been revived by Meenaben’s organs – two kidneys and a liver.
‘SOTO’ success
In Gujarat, on 26 January 2019, the Health Department approved ‘SOTO’ (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) for the patients of the state. Until now, the procedure for obtaining a patient and an organ donor was done only by the hospital. So now the patient can donate organs easily. Organ donation has now increased under the state organ tissue transplant organization (SOTTO). Families of 3 brain dead patients have donated organs in a month. In which the lives of 7 people have been saved.
One million people pledge organ donation
On August 13, during Organ Donation Week, more than 300 activities were organized in 50 cities. One million people pledged to donate organs in Gujarat.
Organ Donation
In Gujarat from 2013 to 2017, 580 organs were donated in Gujarat. It topped Tamil Nadu with 2291 organ donations in the same period.
6500 kidney donation
The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Center has completed 6500 kidney organ transplants in the last 25 years. Dead kidney transplants have fallen to 19 by March 2020. There were 87 in 2019. 2 lakh people die due to liver failure in India.
Surat is donor city
A four-year-old child from Surat underwent a heart transplant in December 2020 in Russia. His heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes and liver were also donated. This was the 35th event of cardiac donation in Gujarat. 28 hearts were donated in Surat. Out of which 20 hearts were installed in Mumbai, 4 hearts in Ahmedabad, 2 hearts in Chennai, 1 heart in Indore and 1 heart in New Delhi.
The first heart transplant was done in the UK in 1968. The first heart transplant in India was done in 1994 in Delhi. The first successful heart transplant was done in Gujarat in 2016. So far 4 (four) heart transplants have been done in a private hospital in Ahmedabad.
180 people donated organs in 2017
Between January and December 2017, 180 people donated organs in Gujarat. Half of which ie 91 organs were donated in Surat. 28 people from Ahmedabad and 26 from Bhavnagar donated organs. Of the 106 cadaver kidney donations in 2017, 52 were from Surat. Bhavnagar is second with 17 kidney donations and Ahmedabad is third with 15. In 2017, 28 out of 62 liver donations were made in Surat. A total of 10 people from Gujarat donated hearts and 9 of them were from Surat.
