The number of lions in Gir increased from 523 to 674 in 5 years, an increase of 29%, unofficial count

The area of the lion has increased by 30% to 8,000 sq km from 30,000 sq km. Lion habitat has increased by 2૩400 sq km in the last 30 years. The Asiatic lion population in the Gir forest has increased by about 29 per cent. Also, forest area has increased by 36%. The lion population has almost doubled since 2001 and its footprint mark has quadrupled (400 percent). When Colonel Watts enumerated in 1880, only 12 lions were found living in Gir. When the Gujarat government first counted in 1968, there were 177 lions.
There are more females than males, 260 females against 161 males.
There is a lion. The lion population has grown the most so far. The number of Gir lions in 2015 was 523 which has increased to 674 in 2020. The last census of lions was conducted in May 2015 with a total population of 523 lions, including 109 lions, 201 lionesses, 140 lion cubs and 73 cubs.
There are 161 males, 260 females, 45 males, 49 females, 22 unidentified females and 137 lion cubs out of a total of 674. The area of lions in 2015 is 22000 sq. Km. Which has increased to 30000 sq. Km in 2020. Poonam of lions was observed from 2 pm on June 5 to 2 pm on June 6. 1400 employees joined the exercise. 13 different sections were provided.
Two dozen lions killed
About two dozen lions have died in the last three months alone due to a disease called babesiosis, officials said. From October to November 2018, 40 lions died due to CDV.

12 lion population
When Colonel Watts enumerated in 1880, only 12 lions were found living in Gir. When the Gujarat government first counted in 1968, there were 177 lions. There were 411 in 1910 and 523 in 1915.
222 lions killed in two years
In the last two years from 1-6-2017 to 31-5-2019, 52 lions, 74 lionesses, 90 lion cubs and 6 W.O. A total of 222 lions died.
According to the 2015 census in Gujarat, the number of lions was 523. According to the 2010 census, the number of lions was 411. The number of lions in 2015 increased by 112 or 27 per cent as compared to 411 in 2010.
In 2015, 268 lions were recorded in Junagadh district, 44 lions in Gir Somnath district, 174 lions in Amreli district and 37 lions in Bhavnagar district. While the census of lions is done every five years, now in 2020 the census of lions will be conducted in Gujarat. 70 radio callers have been ordered from Germany for monitoring. This is a 27 percent increase over 2010. In which 109 adult lions, 201 lions and 213 juvenile lions were found and the total number has reached 523.
Outside Gir forest – Greater Gir
Extensive lion sanctuary and Gir National Park extends beyond Saurashtra to 9 to 10 districts, Greater Gir includes Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Porbandar districts.
The lion’s capacity in the Gir forest is about 250. There are two and a half times lions in front of him. 1153 km area of Gir Sanctuary in 1965, 258 sq km area of Gir National Park in 1975. As many as 222 lions have died in the state in the last two years, including 23 unnatural deaths. Among the lions that died in two years were 90 cubs who died due to in-fight or even low survival rates. The average death rate of a lion is about 10% of the population. The CVD epidemic that broke out in September-October 2018 was fatal. Yet the number of lions was over 700.
There were 523 lions in 2015, which is likely to double this time. The census will be conducted in May 2020. The number of lions is estimated to be between 1100 and 1200. The numbers are counted regularly by the Forest Department’s Beat Guard. This estimate is based on the actions of lions seen in seven districts. Two lions were also spotted in Deduki village, 20 km from Chotil in Surendranagar.
500 lions are fitted with micro-chips
The number of lions with micro-chips has increased to 500. There is strong evidence that their population has increased. Another 150 to 3 to 13 year old lions have not been caught. If we add 400 lions younger than 3 years and above 13 years, the figure crosses 1,000. The exact number of lions is not known due to fear among the people and fear of being taken out of Gujarat and to escape the pressure of the groups.
