While coronavirus has affected major countries in the world both in terms of health and economy, it has turned out to be beneficial for the ceramic industry in Morbi district. Known as the world’s second largest and the largest ceramic cluster in India, the Corona virus outbreak has seen a growth rate of 15% in the last two months. Due to restrictions, people have stopped buying goods from China. The order increased by about 15 percent. Exports have reached 12,000 crore in 2019-20 and they will increase to Rs 15,000 crore in 2020-21 given the corona situation. The industry relies heavily on China for procurement of raw materials like machinery parts and polish abrasive. Machinery parts such as polishing abrasive are imported from China. Morbi has 1100 ceramic manufacturing units, which are divided into four sections – vitrified, wall tiles, floor tiles and sanitary ware. It is an Export Excellence (TEE) in 36 cities of India and one of six cities in the country with an export value of over Rs.1,000 crore.
