Amul Dairy has increased the price of milk by Rs 2 per liter from May 1, 2025. Due to which 20 thousand private dairies of Gujarat made milk expensive. Amul increased the burden of milk in Gujarat by about Rs 7 crore.
In the year 2009-10, it was 28 to 30 rupees per liter. In the year 2010-19, the selling price increased by 100%. In the year 2025, it increased from Rs 56 to Rs 68 per liter. It has increased by Rs 12 every year. Milk price of Rs 30 per liter has increased to Rs 100 per liter in 20 years. 68. There has been an increase of 126.67 percent in 15 years. Amul is increasing the price by 8.50 percent every year.
An average price increase of 8.50 percent means that the inflation rate is 8.50 percent or Amul is giving more money to the cattle farmers.
Sales of milk through cooperative dairies in Gujarat increased from 60.44 lakh liters to 65.84 lakh liters per day in 2023-24. Milk sales in the cooperative sector increased by 8.93 percent in 2023-24 compared to 2021-22, while the number of milk-producing animals in Gujarat has increased by only 3.84 percent. This simply means that cattle farmers are not being given that much increase.
Amul Dairy in Gujarat collects 3 crore 30 lakh liters of milk daily. Apart from Gujarat, it is supplied to the markets of Delhi-NCR, West Bengal and Mumbai. The company sells more than 150 lakh liters of milk a day. This is 3 to 4 percent of the maximum retail price of milk. A day earlier, Mother Dairy had announced a price hike of Rs 2 per liter across the country. 15 thousand dairies in 17 metros, including 5 thousand in Ahmedabad, 4 thousand in Surat, 1 thousand in Vadodara, 500 in Rajkot and 5 thousand dairies in other 13 metros, have increased the price of milk by Rs 2 per liter. The vicious circle of price hike has started in other items as well. After milk, now soon the prices of Shrikhand, sweets, curd, butter, buttermilk, which are in special demand in the scorching heat, will also increase. The price of curd may increase by Rs 5 per kg and the price of sweets, Shrikhand may increase by Rs 20 per kg. Rajkot Dairy Association has around 500 dairies and apart from Rajkot Dairy’s daily sale of 3.50 lakh litres, private dairies together sell an average of more than 6 lakh litres of milk.

Amul had earlier increased the price of milk in June 2024. In 2024, 50 ml more milk was given in 1 liter pack and 100 ml more milk in 2 liter pack for 5 months. Apart from this, the price of 1 liter pack was also reduced by Rs 1 in January 2025.
In Gujarat, 3 crore 30 lakh liters of milk is collected daily from 36 lakh cattle farmers by 18,600 milk cooperatives.
The population of Gujarat is 7 crore. The number of milch cattle in the state has increased from 92 lakh 83 thousand 300 to 96 lakh 39 thousand 860 in two years. There has been an increase of less than 2 percent per year. On the other hand, milk production is increasing.
Every 9 people in the country have a dairy cattle. Gujarat has 65.84 lakh liters.
There are 12 milk unions associated with Amul. Amul returns 80 percent of the income from milk sales to the cattle rearers. Amul claims that there are 36 lakh cattle rearers in the state. There are 58 lakh farmers.

In 2021, the price of Amul milk was increased by Rs 2 per liter after one and a half years.
The last milk purchase price in 2020-21 was Rs 835.51 per kg fat. The final milk procurement price in 2019-20 was Rs 811 per kg fat. Which shows an increase of Rs 24. Which is less than 3 percent. In 20 years, the share of buffaloes, crossbreds, exotic cows in Indian dairy increased (from 18.5% to 32.8%) and the number of indigenous cattle decreased (from 24.6% to 20.8%).
Demand for ghee, ice cream, khoya, paneer, cheese and other high-fat milk products is increasing. But the supply comes from crossbreds that give low-fat milk. The price of full-fat milk is increasing due to incompatibility. It is happening.
